I'm thoroughly confused about what to wear to The GRAMMYs. I'm attending with my album producer (and mega-country songwriter) Victoria Shaw. For her, it’s a business thang. For me: it’s a BIG thang! But since I'm going as her guest, as an audience member, not as a reporter, and I'm steering clear of the red carpet... I'm getting conflicting info on what's appropriate to wear. How can it be Feb 2nd, Groundhog Day? I feel like we just finished this song and dance.
I have a love/hate relationship with this day as a news anchor.
On one hand, I love showing live pictures of the funny folks at Gobbler’s Knob dancing at 6 in the morning (as I wonder out loud "is there alcohol involved?").
On the other hand I despise how long it takes the handlers to "proclaim" what Punxsutawney Phil "decides," and that he almost ALWAYS allegedly sees his shadow allegedly bringing more winter. And finally, I feel bad for the rodent. Lights and noise and singing "Y-M-C-A" ain’t a natural occurrence for groundhogs.

Bob Van Dillen's National Forecast for Wednesday

I’m watching two storms in the Lower 48 this morning, one in the East and One in the West.

A storm centered over the Great lakes has a cold front extending towards the Gulf Coast with rain and storms popping up all around. LA/MS seems to be getting the strongest storms this morning, but it could edge into TN, AL later today. Pockets of rain are sliding north through the OH valley and into the NE as well. Cold air trapped at the surface in New England has the rain switching to sleet, freezing rain, and all snow in ME. 3-7” is possible in northern ME today.

Dense fog has the visibility down in Central TX, watching for delays in Dallas and Houston.

The West has a storm rolling in with snow and valley rain in WA, OR, and ID. Rain will nose S into the Bay Area too. Those are the bullet points, I’ll see ya out there.

It’ll be interesting to watch the Denver forecast over the next few days. The Pacific storm will round down the Four Corners and turn into a big snow maker for the Front Range and Denver metro. 6-12” of snow is possible Thursday night into Friday, after a high of 52 today. Again, the Denver weather is crazier than a Charlie Sheen Saturday Night. Mile High, baby!

Bob Van Dillen's Monday Forecast: Lake-Effect Snow & More Smoke

The I-75 stretch from the GA border to Ocala had the dense smoke set up again in the pre-dawn hours this morning, and it dropped visibilities to less than a quarter mile at times. The temperatures from the surface up to about 5-600 feet cooled down fast last night under clear skies with light winds, but the temps above that layer stayed about 10-20 degrees warmer. Warm air on top of cold air sets up an inversion, and the smoke can’t break through it to rise. That essentially squeezes all the local brush fire smoke in the atmosphere down to the surface, making the visibility go way down. Once the sun comes up, the ground starts to warm and the smoke disperses, allowing the vis. to improve. Early morning travel may be tough again tomorrow morning.

Lake-effect snow is hammering on the shores of Lake Ontario this morning, but with an advancing warm front from the MW this will end shortly. An exiting storm has the wind cranking in the NE today, so I’m watching for some air travel delays from Boston to NYC.

The snow ahead of the front will give a 1-2” blanket on WI and MI today as well.

The Santa Ana winds are done for S CA but it will remain dry today, with the bulk of the valley rain and mountain snow edging through the Pacific NW into the Northern Rockies.
