As Maury would say, “Mike, you are NOT the father!” Meet four of the folks who bring you Prime News every night at 5 Eastern on CNN Headline News. From left to right: “Rock of Love” fan: Jennifer Williams, euphonium virtuoso: Robyn Sjogren, Prime News’ moral center: Mike Galanos & dog lover: Katy Rogers.

I’ve mentioned here before that “News To Me” shares office space at CNN Center with the team from “Prime News.” Our area is known as “The Loft,” because it’s a low-ceilinged space, tucked away up a flight of stairs from the main studio. Lately those stairs have been bringing some extra staff to the loft thanks to not 1, not 2, but THREE pregnancies amongst our Prime News colleagues! Including a set of twins! One of the guys on the Prime News crew (not pictured above) is also expecting! Well, his wife is… funny that we have to qualify that now. Thanks, “Oprah’s pregnant man!”

My concern is what effect our close proximity to all those pregnancy hormones may have on the “News To Me” staff. Except for Summer-Intern Mandy (who is already honing her maternal instincts on Gracie, her 4 month old Maltese) we’re all guys on “News To Me” so any baby announcements would have to come from a significant other. That means 4 members of this team are at risk!

Due to the drastic effect the loss of 4 team members for simultaneous paternity leave would have on this show we are looking into erecting some type of “Andromeda Strain” containment field around our area of the loft for the next 9 months. I’ve been in touch with the CDC here in Atlanta and it turns out that the cost to construct a truly “baby-bump” free zone would equal something close to Sarah Jessica Parker’s shoe budget. Since the “News To Me” shoe budget barely covers the cost of Eric’s flip flops… the high-tech anti-embryo defense system plan is out.

Those 4 high-risk “News To Me’ers” will just have to rely on self-control… something none of us possess a lot of. Guess I’ll go ahead and put in the order for infant sized “News To Me” baby tees, and “My First YouTube” video cameras.

Seriously though, Mazel Tov to all our preggers Prime News friends! With 5 new potential “Headline News” viewers on the way I feel a ratings spike in the Zero to one-year-old demo in about 5 months!

You know, you never know how old you are until you hang around a bunch of happy, inspired, and motivated youths like I did recently. I emceed a dinner for an organization which I believe in wholeheartedly called the 21st Century Leaders. It’s basically a group that finds the best-of-the-best and the brightest High School kids and invites them to spend some time with companies to learn what goes on behind the corporate iron curtain. It’s like a big summer camp for the smart kids.

So, there I was sitting at a table amongst 12 High School kids who’s SAT scores looked more like Coordinating Producer Mike Kane’s golf score than actual real SAT numbers. I mean, when you are getting like 1400 on the SAT, you are smart, no doubt about it… but c’mon how are your social skills? (BTW, I got a 820 on the SAT. BTW #2, the kids who were sitting with me, had GREAT social skills.) I looked around the table and thought to myself, “you know Lanford…these kids are the future…they are the ‘News To Me‘ audience… not only do they get the value of user-generated content, they put it to use every day of their lives… and not just looking for ways to increase their Grand Theft Auto scores. They put it to use to spread the word about causes they care about, products they’ve invented and ideas they’ve hatched that will make them millionaires!”

I can’t begin to tell you with all the bad press kids today get, how refreshing it was to sit around some kids who had goals that would make even Dr. Sanjay blush: doctors, lawyers, accountants… not ONE said, basketball star, music mogul or that smug remark all kids say today… President of the United States… these kids had real dreams… and I wish them all the best.

Oh, and please keep watching “News To Me” (some of them actually do watch).

BTW, if you were one of the lucky kids who got to take a picture with me… there was a long line… (yeah right)…. please let me know… I want a copy to see what I look like. See, I told you I was getting old.

And now for a little bit of nepotism :

Speaking of youth and user generated stuff, I have to plug my nephew who lives up in the coldest region of the country, Richfield OH… his name is Trevor and he has a band called The Unaccompanied Minors… think “School of Rock.” Check them out and maybe you can book them at your next gig! Like every successful band, they’re using the web to get their message out. Hopefully The Unaccompanied Minors will become rich and successful and I can just go on the road with them and be their roadie… tattoos and all.

It’s funny, where Trevor got the musical talent I don’t know, but he plays multiple instruments and plays them all well. It seems all my nephews and nieces got all the talent. So to Zachary, Madison and Trevor… keep reaching for your dreams, utilize the web and don’t make an 820 on the SAT like your Uncle Eric.

Keep rocking!

Last week Eric was almost ticketed for jaywalking while shooting “News To Me.” This week, we actually let him behind the wheel of a moving car while we shot the show. Thankfully, we managed to make it though this shoot with no police intervention, (though we did take out extra insurance just in case).

Now that we’re home from our little North Georgia road trip, we’ve got to unpack our duffel bags which we FILLED with links to all the places we visited in this weekend’s show. Pretend like you work for the TSA, put on some rubber gloves and dig through our link filled luggage :

Baboon rampage:
You may be used to seeing a critter or two in your neighborhood, a possum, raccoon, deer. Maybe even something a little more exotic in certain areas of the country, like an alligator or coyote. But baboons?

Pedal powered phone:

Caption this!
Congratulations to Dan who submitted the winning caption for our “Giant Soccer Players” Caption This contest, “It seems that steroid use just isn’t a problem in baseball anymore.” Good one dude!

Now’s your chance to give it a shot… our NEW Caption This contest is up and running… let the pun’s begin!

Henri the cat:
Visit filmmaker William Braden’s website willbraden.com to see the full short film that LA Weekly said is “A Hilarious parody of European existentialism, on a budget probably no pricier than a week’s supply of cat food.”

Take a look at a special blog-only bonus video featuring Will reciting some of his favorite cat haiku.

Little girl stuck in vending machine:
It sounds pretty terrible, but it sure does look like she’s a having fun to me. YouTube.com

Texting while driving… on a MOTORCYCLE:
We love this video! Props to Mandy the “News To Me” summer intern for turning us on to it! Check it out on YouTube.

Bodega tour
Take a very funny tour of your friendly neighborhood bodega, and find out what ‘quarter water‘ is on InternetsCelebrities.com.

The emergency party button:
Oh sure… Office Depot thinks they’re so cool with their “Easy Button.” Dude, that ain’t nuthin’ compared to what happens when you hit “The Emergency Party Button!”

That’s all for this weekend! Let us know what you thought of the show, or let us know about a person, blog, site, video or gadget you’d like to see featured next week!

Well, it is with great pleasure that we present the writer, director and voice actor who brought you a look into Henri’s world, Will Braden, who has written a series of haiku from a cat’s point of view. It’s a web-only extra from this weekend’s show! To hear the artist’s rendition of Will’s poetry, click on the picture above.

BTW, did you know that haiku is the plural for haiku? It is. I looked it up.

If you are more of a reader than a listener… or if your philistine boss frowns on you listening to poetry at work… we have a written version of Will’s work on the next page.

We’d love it if you would add your own haiku, about cats or anything else! Just click “add a comment” below.

The written versions of Will’s work, and instructions on writing your own haiku (it’s really easy) are on the next page.

Here’s how a haiku works:
First line: 5 syllables
Second line: 7 syllables
Third line: 5 syllables
No rhyming necessary

Like this:
“News To Me” is on
I should be watching, but no
Eric’s head scares me

OK… explanations done… without further ado:

Cat Haiku by William Braden

1.
you shower each day
yet your tongue works perfectly
I just don’t get you

2.
I lounge in the sun
savoring the morning scents
have fun at work

3.
I nuzzle your leg
as if to say, I love you
and to wipe my nose

4.
I’m writing a book
“humans: good for laps and food”
you’re chapter 14

5.
when I watch you work
I’m not curious or coy
I am judging you

6.
I can walk through walls!
I’ve shed corporeal self!
oh, a new cat door

7.
from high on my perch
I rule over all below
also, I’m stuck

8.
my whiskers guide me
tiny sensors in the dark
also, chicks dig them

9.
I caught you a mouse!
it’s in the kitchen. enjoy!
what is that look for?

10.
cat food can opens!
wait, what is that? pineapple?
you heartless bastard

11.
bringer of great things
daily grinding fount of joy
the can opener

12.
I pee on what’s mine
what do you do, write your name?
yeah, that’s gonna work

13.
I love to eat grass
though it makes me sick each time
like you and vodka

14.
violent growling shake
a twisting closet demon
the vacuum cleaner

15.
feet under covers
are my mortal enemies
your toes are my foes

Sitting at my desk at CNN Center on Tuesday I happened to look up at the live feed from Studio H just in time to see Chuck Roberts toss to security camera video of a pickup pulling a 5th wheel trailer that clips the roof of a bank drive-through and brings the whole thing smashing down onto the truck! It’s the kind of clip that causes you, completely against your will, to say, “Holy crap!” or “Duuuuude!” or “No WAY!” It’s only after that first impulse to stop and stare at disaster that the empathy kicks in and your next words are, “Are they OK?” In this case the answer is yes, but only barely.

Seconds later I’d found the clip online. While I watched it over and over and over and I also went about trying to find any additional information I could about where this happened and the condition of the driver. That led me to the online “newspaper” Shelby County Today that covers the area around the city of Center, Texas where the crash occurred. A couple of emails later and Richard Hughes who runs that site had sent me several pics he’d taken at the scene, including the one above. Trust me when I say the video only tells part of the story…

Get a look INSIDE the cab of the truck and see how big the drive through roof really is (or was) .

Here’s the good news, According to shelbycountytoday.com, the driver Mickey Miller, and his 10 year old son were the only people in the truck, and neither of them were hurt! Luckily no other cars were in the drive-through area either.

If you’re too lazy to Google it… we’ll have the video for you on this weekend’s show, repeatedly, and likely in slo-mo too. You can also catch it on CNN.com/video.

On any given weekend “News To Me” reaches an audience larger than the population of Houston, Texas (and you know that everything’s bigger in Texas, even audiences). Even with a crowd like that watching, sometimes it takes one single e-mail to put things in true perspective.

Last weekend, we profiled a woman named Joy Nash who created and maintains the blog FatRant.com. That’s her in the pic above! Joy is an actress and comedian who is proud of who she is, how she looks and how she makes others feel. On her blog she writes about being unashamed of her weight and tries to empower those who are self-conscious about their body.

Tuesday morning we received an e-mail from Joy. She wrote to tell us thanks for running her story and to pass on an e-mail she got from Tasha who lives in the little burg of Columbia City, Indiana. It read, in part:

“The other day I sat at my computer feeling sad and depressed, trying to search for websites that would inspire some self-confidence. Well to no avail I found nothing other than a whole bunch of size 4 women talking about what they do to ‘make themselves feel better.’ So I sat my fat butt in front of the TV and started to watch the news… A woman that looks just like me popped on the TV, with her “Fat Rant,” talking about women’s self esteem, feeling better about yourself and not letting weight hold you back.

… I have always heard, ‘Tasha, you are so pretty. If only you could lose the weight.’ Joy, its like you were an answered prayer. For 23 years I have struggled with getting out of bed to face the world with my fat self. Thank you so much for pushing me to believe that I am just as good as everyone else. I don’t have to be a size 4 to feel good…

Thank you Joy for helping me believe in myself.”

“News To Me” was only the messenger… we didn’t answer her prayer but it sure does feel great to know that we brought the woman who DID into Tasha’s living room.

For more info on Joy Nash and her very funny and obviously inspiring “Fat Rants” check out her blog at FatRant.com or look her up on MySpace!

If you missed the piece on last weekend’s show you can watch it on CNN.com.

Who will we help to inspire next? Do me a favor and watch this weekend. Be sure to send us an e-mail if it turns out to be you!

Murphy’s Law is defined as anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. That was the case on this shoot. It was one of those shoots where all you can do is laugh at this situation because you would otherwise pop a blood vessel due to stress. This will probably not be the only post about this shoot however; it will be the only one from my perspective.

Earlier in the week I spoke to Mike and he said we would meet at the Dawsonville Outlet Mall at 10AM. So I wake up Saturday morning and stumble out of bed like I always do. I put on my jeans and a shirt as I always do and headed to the shoot. This is where it all began to go down hill.

See what happened :

So I get to the Dawsonville Outlet Mall at 10am as planned. I look at all the other crew members and I realize that I am not in the khaki short club. Yes I threw on some heavy denim jeans to wear in like 90 something degree weather. I know I am a smart one for this. So I am thinking, “its an outlet mall, there have to be some cheap shorts somewhere”. So I run to one store…they aren’t open. I run to another store…their shorts are too expensive. I back to the first store…their shorts cost even more. Finally I run into the last store and end up spending like $26 on some shorts. Now this doesn’t seem too bad. But then Teague says, “Well we have to go to the Wal-Mart across the street to pick up some stuff”. Are you serious? I could have bought some shorts for like 8 bucks.

So anyway, we go to wal-mizzel and Teague and I are trying to figure out what flotation device to get Eric. (I know you are asking why we need this. You have to watch the show this weekend to see where and why). So the choices were between a regular inner tube and the children’s sea-horse floaty. I voted for the floaty, but we had to take a vote amongst the crew. We ultimately didn’t use one. But can you imagine Eric on a floating seahorse? I think Eric would have embodied the essence of cool on that one

So we loaded up into 3 cars, well really 2 cars and a minivan. Teague was going to be shooting Eric from one car, while Eric was driving another car. Now this seemed like a good idea…at the time. The whole thing seems simple enough. You just put both cars next to each other. What we failed to realize that it is not the best idea when the camera man is hanging out of the window. What’s worse is being on a two lane highway was no the best place for this. we had cars, trucks, and motorcycles trying to pass. We eventually ran out of highway and had to get back into single file formation. So I am thinking we are going to turn around and go back to the outlet mall. I was sadly mistaken, for we kept driving. Se here I am sitting in the passenger side of this minivan not knowing where the heck we are going. Apparently Gerald (our sound guy) and myself were on a need to know basis and apparently we didn’t need to know. We just followed.

So we shoot a couple of leads and switch around the driving arrangements. Aaron is driving one car, I’m driving the minivan, and Eric is driving with Teague and Gerald in the car. We had been driving for about 30 minutes when I began to pick up radio stations from North Carolina! How did we end up that close to North Carolina? I mean I figured we were going to North Georgia but wow!

So we pull up to this old time gas station. We go and set up for the shot and all we can hear is Teague yelling at somebody. We look up and we see this green truck run over Teague’s tripod. He had set it up behind this truck and forgot he put it there. The guy in the truck obviously didn’t look before he backed up. So the guy gets out and he is a little pissed like “why are you hitting my truck”. I don’t know what Teague said, but the guy drove off without reaching towards his gun rack that was in the back window. What was interesting about this particular lead it that it only took like 30 seconds to shoot…if that. Eric nailed it the first time around and that was it. For Eric, that’s like hitting the mega-million jackpot…it never happens. So we load up and proceed on to, what was probably the most stressful scene to shoot.

The scenario for the next scene was that Eric was supposed to be on the side of the mountain and his car has broken down. Aaron finds this beautiful overlook and we decide to set up there. I am getting something out of the van and I look over at Teague’s car. Ironically the car we were going to use in the shot, actually started gushing antifreeze. It was like a running faucet. Teague starts pitching a fit. Only this time he had just cause to do so. I mean we are at the top of a freaking mountain and his car starts to break down. I mean who do you call in this situation? What do you tell them? “Ah yea, I’m at the top of Blood Mountain. Can you come and tow my car” I mean I don’t know how anything with more that 2 axles can get up that thing. So after looking at the car, Aaron determines that it is only the auxiliary canister that is leaking anti-freeze and not the radiator. So it was drivable. Thank goodness. That would suck if the car was still stuck up there. Oh but that’s only the start of what went wrong on this scene.

Now we needed the car to be smoking for this particular shot. And with Teague’s car breaking down, we thought that his show would be easy to get. We thought since the coolant was leaking the engine would already be hot enough if not smoking. But as you can guess, the block wasn’t hot enough. So we decide that we would throw some water on the block to get some steam going. But once again, the block wasn’t hot enough. So what do we do? Teague comes up with the brilliant idea to light some pine straw on fire right next to a car. All we needed was dry pine straw and a lighter. Quick question, who has a lighter? Of course they look to the smoker (me) for one. The funny thing is, I quit smoking about a month ago (it’s been a long month). So I am here getting ridiculed by everyone about how I am supposed to have a lighter. In the meantime, we try to light this stuff with a cigarette lighter and some tissue paper. I think we tried to do this for about an hour. During this hour, Teague has managed to get so riled up that he kicks his car (I mean it can’t get much worse right). I get stung by some sort of bug to where I have to pull the stinger out. Something else bit me on the back of my head. By this time everyone was just ready to go home. But it was only 2pm. We still had a long way to go. I guess you will have to see this weekend if we were able to get the stuff lit.

We arrive at this inner tube site in Helen, Georgia about 45 minutes later. Matter of fact, we drive dead in to the center of the town where so much was going on. As we are driving down the main street, Eric and I turn right to go into a parking lot. Unfortunately, Aaron didn’t get that message. Aaron missed the turn and kept going straight. So we’re calling him trying to figure out where he is and giving him directions how to get to where we are. After about 20 minutes, he is able to turn around and get to the parking lot. Mind you, it’s like 90 some odd degrees and I am outside carrying the run bag, the tripod, the flex-fill, and occasionally the shotgun boom.

“The Redneck Riviera”

So we walk up to what Eric called “the Redneck Riviera “ which was basically people drifting in inner tubes in knee-high water. Eric and Teague decide that this would be a great shot so, once again we set everything up. Eric walks out to some rocks that are in the middle of the water. He says his lines and then he makes his way back towards dry land. And then everyone hears a “ploosh” noise. We look over and Eric has dropped the walkie –talkie in the water. So Eric brings the walkie-talkie over to us and we try to determine if it is damaged. We dry it off and give it a test. The thing ended up sounding like a television set from the 1940’s. The sound was all distorted, and the transmitter wasn’t even working. Basically we gave Eric a walkie-talkie and he gave us a paper weight. What else can go wrong on this shoot?

Well we finish up all of the leads except for one. We end up leaving Helen and start making our way back around the mountain. We see a cow field and decide this will be the place for the last shoot. By this time it is beginning to rain. We pull over on the side of the road and set up for the last time. It just so happens that a billion cars and trucks want to drive along this one road. I mean it’s a freakin’ mountain town. How many cars can pass through here? So we decide to shoot further down the hill, right off the street. Teague asked me to pull out the flex and reflect some light on Eric’s face. So I grab the flex and hop off the street…and land in an ant pile!. So I am jumping and cursing, and Teague and Eric just think I am complaining until I take of my shoe and show them. Teague said it best, “If the light is shaking on Eric’s face, don’t worry. That’s just Charles getting eaten by all the ants” I don’t know if the light is shaky or not. Like you, I am just going to have to watch the show this weekend and find out. We finish the shot and all I can think about is I want to get out of here.

The reason I call this shoot Murphy’s Law is that EVERYTHING went wrong. not knowing where we’re going; Getting yelled at by handfuls of traffic; a car breaking down on the side of a mountain; the search for a lighter; getting eaten alive or stung by 3 different types of bugs, equipment breaking. Like this blog post, the day was long and thank God this shoot is over!

If you want more info on anything you see in this weekend’s “News To Me,” congrats! You are on the right blog!

We must be getting pretty big time because this weekend’s show was so loaded with “the goodness” (as opposed to “The Wackness“) that we had to bump a couple pieces. In the the news biz when we have to reschedule a previously planned interview or segment for a later date, we say its been “bumped.” The two most blatant bumps in this weekend show were our “Caption This” winner from last week, and Henri the Cat.

We emailed Henri’s “people” to let them know his segment had been bumped and got this reply, apparently from the cat himself in his native French, “Toujours, la meme chose - souffrir, c’est mon destin.” Which according to his translator Will Braden means “It’s always the same… suffering is my fate.” Our reply, “Traiter avec elle chat!” Which according to Google Translate means, “Deal with it cat!”

As for our giant soccer player “Caption This” winner… you’re 3 milliseconds of fame is still coming! As is your t-shirt! In the meantime though we have a NEW “Caption This” up. Get in on that one before the massive throngs of viewers get their first look at it next weekend.

Henri and the winning “Caption This” caption are now scheduled to air starting Saturday 7/19.

It’s entirely possible that you ARE new here. According to “the numbers” there are more of you watching “News To Me” on Headline News, and a lot more of you visiting us at cnn.com/newstome.

If you’re a “News To Me” newbie we want to make sure you have everything you need to make watching the show as interactive and immersive as possible. If you’ve been with us all along… keep reading… you might just find out something you didn’t know!

For example:

We have a weekly newsletter. It’s free, it’s only once a week (usually Thursdays) and it’s full of reasons to add a “News To Me” Season Pass on TiVo. We know giving out your email address is a big deal, so we promise not to abuse that trust. Just one email a week. Cross our hearts.

You can win stuff! Our “Caption This” contest is always up on our showpage.

Each weekend we post a list of links to as many of the things we had on the show as possible right here. So, if you aren’t watching “News To Me” with your laptop actually IN your lap you can come back later and look them up!

Did you know that if you MISS a show, you can go over to our archives and see some of the best bits? Stories from our last show all the way back to when we first went on the air are there. UFO’s, killer tornadoes, artsy internet projects, bizzare bloggers and some of the best breaking news iReports are there waiting to be watched again!

We’re not usually this blatantly promotional on the blog by the way. This is usually where we take you behind the scenes to see how “News To Me” actually comes together, show you what were working on for upcoming shows, let you look inside Eric’s head, and offer up extras and updates that we just didn’t have time to put in the show.

The gateway to all this value added material is the “News To Me” showpage. If you had a bookmark for it, that would make getting there pretty darn easy wouldn’t it?!

See you Saturday!
