Carter says a joint Obama-Clinton ticket is unlikely.

(CNN) — Hillary Clinton would accept the No. 2 spot on the Democratic ticket, but it's highly unlikely Barack Obama will offer it to her should he be the party's nominee, former President Jimmy Carter said Tuesday.

Speaking during a question and answer session at an event in Houston Tuesday night, Carter said, in his view, it's not impossible the two could pair up for the general election. But the former president said Obama will most likely search for a different vice presidential candidate.

"I think it would be highly unlikely for Obama to ask her to take it," Carter said. "Because I don't see how it would help his ticket. I think he needs somebody like a [former Georgia Sen.] Sam Nunn, but I won't name others.”

"But I think if he asked her, she would take it," Carter added.

The former president also reiterated that he does not have direct contact with either campaign and is not privy to the VP deliberations.

Carter also said a unity ticket would likely help the party come together after the prolonged and at times divisive primary race. But he stopped short of saying such a ticket would be the strongest Democrats could field

"That would be the ticket the republicans would favor I think," he said.

Carter, a Democratic superdelegate, has yet to formally endorse a candidate, but he has strongly hinted he is in favor of Obama.

Well folks, it's official! I am DONE with HRC supporters. I could care less if they vote in November or not. After the pathetic display of people like Geraldine Ferraro in the last few days, I am not interested in having their support.

I hope that they all stay home in November. Go ahead and do it. As a member of NARAL, I dare them to STAY HOME and watch McCain repeal Roe v. Wade. Go ahead, make my day.

I am tired of Obama supporters having to tip toe around as though we should be ASHAMED that our candidate WON fair and square. No more for me. I am going to GLOAT and BE THRILLED.

Those former HRC supporters who want to jump on the O train, welcome. To the others, feel free to stay home in November. Your children and grandchildren will thank you for contributing to the fall of a great power by electing McCain.

Jane   May 21st, 2008 1:08 pm ET

Oh God no don't let Hillary anywhere near the VP slot! It's high time the woman is put on permanent mute!

Joseph, Los Angeles   May 21st, 2008 1:08 pm ET

I agree with President Carter. The Republicans would have that Obama/Clinton for lunch… because they would come out in droves to defeat Hillary Clinton. They want her on this ticket and are licking their chops right now.

jimtranr in Oregon   May 21st, 2008 1:08 pm ET

If Hillary's smart, she wouldn't accept the VP offer if Obama made it. The reason? If he lost the general, the Hillary-bashing chatterati would–erroneously– blame her presence on the ticket for the loss.

And if he won with her as his Vice President, what then? John Nance Garner was right when he said being VP wasn't worth a bucket of warm spit. Hillary would do better to remain in the Senate where she can get things done and not have to play second fiddle to an overhyped Chief Executive likely to fall flat on his face whenever the chips are down.

Big Vin   May 21st, 2008 1:08 pm ET

Wow!!! Worst president ever puts in his two cents. Glad to see that the world's #1 appeaser has some time on his hands. God help us all if Jimmy Carter Jr. (Mr. Obama) gets into the White House

matthew in SF   May 21st, 2008 1:08 pm ET

Also, the VP isn't in the White House, right? Why are these people worried about Bill being back in the White House if Hillary is VP?

Kevin   May 21st, 2008 1:07 pm ET

What is the big deal?

This is not about popularity contest. This is about the future of our nation.

I think Obama has good wishes, is a dreamer, has hope of change, is too young for this… but He can actually do a pretty good job… the only thing I am worried about is that he will let all the middle easterns come our way easily.

Hillary has made mistakes but has proven and has worked hard for this country. She made a mistake with the war in Irak…. but I think she will stand in a best position for our country… why people do not want to elect her? simply because she is a woman… no matter what they say…

Finnaly, let's look at real issues…. and let's make up our minds….

Sam   May 21st, 2008 1:07 pm ET

For all the Hillary bashers…remove your emotion and do your home work. See what she has accomplished in her life and career. You might be surprised.

Sorry Matt, I am calling BS on that. weary and frustrated? please. no.

proObama? - 2008? - yes I am!

but to his active supporters - stop trying to intimidate and threaten and bash. get it together. So HRC supporters will vote for McCain if things dont go their way. But what are you 'yes we can' people going to do if things dont go your way - riot? Represent Obama for God's sake. Exemplify the dignity of the man. Emulate - dont spread hate!

Billion   May 21st, 2008 1:06 pm ET

I read all these comments .. its too bad that hillary supporters wont vote for barack due to the comments made by barack supporters. Look at the man himself, and what he stands for, not what other ppl that support him think. Its the principle behind barack that we should focus on. He is a legitimate person, who is different from past politicians.

This is a man who came from nothing to something, a man who handily beat the clintons, a powerhouse political family. To vote for mccain, who represents a 3rd bush term - even more radical on foreign policy then bush - would be a disaster.

Take a look at barack, hes a good man, that will put the US back on the world map and fix this crippled economy.

Kim Sims KY transplant in GA   May 21st, 2008 1:06 pm ET

I am SO sure Senator Obama would not even dream of offering the VP spot to a woman who has lied, cried and is somewhat delusional! I agree she is making strides for women , however she is NOT the first woman to run for this office & will not be the last.

Hilary & her husband had their turn in the White House…I say let the remaining states vote, then they can take their toys and go home. Hilary has been planting this seed of being president since the day they left the White House, but its OBVIOUS it is NOT her time!!

As far as her winning KY…there were tons of Blacks & Whites that voted for Obama. She went up in those cricks & hollers were all those inbred, possum eating, illiterates live. The only Black person most of them know is Michael Jordan.

Obama would not get the vote in those places even if he put Hilary AND Bill on the ticket. I am a Black woman from Louisville, KY and racism there is STRONG!! I KNOW what I am talking about!

I am proud of the Blacks AND Whites that did go out to vote for the next president of the United States of America…Barack Obama!!!

OBAMA 08-12!

We're close to the finish line in the primaries, and CNN, your campaign news reports, Political Ticker notably, have been many times so inaccurate and biased that I chuckle at everything. And, the same people with the same venom keep attacking Senator Clinton and her supporters to death. You and them make me feel ashamed and apprehensive to join in to support Senator Obama all the way. It shows that the Obama camp wants to win the primaries at all cost but I doubt that he will succeed at the general election without the votes from Senator Clinton's supporters.
Be kinder and wiser, people.

TheFaithful   May 21st, 2008 1:05 pm ET

The Clinton Family will do just about anything to save their face in their predicament. If HRC does not get the nomination to Obama, Bill and Hillary will lose their political clout in the US and around the world. Bill will get less speaking engagements, less donation to his foundations, less money from lobbyists, etc. etc. Hillary probably will not get re-elected as a NY senator since she only used NY as a convenient stepping stone to prepare for her presidential ambition. Bill and Hillary are probably preparing to make Chelsea the first woman president that Hillary wanted to be but could not be. The Clinton Family is all about making a legacy for themselves.

It makes one wonder what Hillary Clinton has on her mind. She continues to run despite her mathematical odds against gaining the nomination. She is in red ink with respect to her campaign payment obligations. It appears to be all over until she tosses in the towel. And yet this woman continues to politic. What is she "lobbying for"?

Obama supporters need to realize we democrats that vote for the candidate rather then just whatever the party throws at, us are not happy with Obamas' far left ideas. We will not support him just because he is the nominee. We are often referred to as Reagan Democrats. We do not blindly follow anybody. We may not like McCain but we will weigh the options. I, for one of at least thirty I know of, will write Hillary Clinton on our ballots in November.

When you have campaigned saying that Clinton is representative of the Washington establishment and then pick her as a running mate the message is you'll do anything to win. That will further divide the party and will likely set the stage for loosing the General as well. If indeed he is the nominee he would be better of picking a prominent Democrat who hasn't been connected with the Washington establishment. Maybe a woman but whom ever it is I just hope this person has been well vetted.

he is correct in at least one thing   May 21st, 2008 1:05 pm ET

That the Obama/Clinton is a DREAM ticket for the REPUBLICANS. Their party is floundering and the one person who can unify them the most is Hillary Clinton. If she's on the November ticket, expect record Republican turnout.

I wish Carter would stick to building houses. He's the worst president in US history and has been wrong on every single foreign policy issue…Iran in the 70s, North Korea ("I can't believe Kim Jong Il lied"), to Hamas.

Take note people…Obama has the same ideas that Carter did!!!

Clinton would be a nightmare VP. She would undermine Obama, and take credit for any accomplishments. I know it's unprecedented, but I could see her challenging him again in 2012 even as his VP. She would capitalize on Obama's naivete and lack of experience to bolster her standing with voters.

GDC   May 21st, 2008 1:03 pm ET

I really think Obama should take a closer look at Kathleen Sibelius. I know she's one that's already on his short list and he should really move her up on that list for a much closer look at being his running mate. She's done some amazing things in Kansas and would help toward gaining some of the female supporters that so strongly support Hillary.

If Sibelius served as VP in 2008 and 2012, with positive improvements in the country, I would without a doubt vote for her as president 2016. Her record/history is very strong and I think she brings much more honor, respect, and positive movement to the country then Hillary has shown in the last year. I have more respect for her right now then I've ever had for Hillary.

Otherwise be happy that the Dems have the upper hand right now, because another 4 years of McSame is going to put a serious dent in all of your pay-checks. You think it's bad now…go ahead an let your ignorant opinions put him in the White House and see what

Jimmy is the man! However, it's time to be done with the Clintons. Obama needs someone with military experience and Hillary's little jaunt to Bosnia just isn't enough. I don't see how Hillary could take the V.P. job … she is clearly so self-serving and self-centered that even if elected as the V.P. I think she would try and act like she was the President.

Another thing, I cannot believe that a large percentage of the Obama supporter's believe that he can win without her supporter's. It just makes me wonder how stupid some of you really are.

Also, how can Obama be 'ahead' of McCain in national polls if the Democratic party is still so HUGELY divided (exit polls in primaries are still showing that)?

The BLACK vote   May 21st, 2008 1:02 pm ET

How is Hillary Clinton going to win the Black vote???

NO DEMOCRAT HAS WON THE WHITE HOUSE IN THE LAST 40 YEARS WITHOUT THE BLACK VOTE.

Those so-called Blue Collar White voters usually go back home to the Republican party during general elections.

DEMOCRATS HAVE ONLY BEEN ABLE TO WIN 30% OF THEM IN THE HIGH COUNT…IT THE AFRICAN AMERICAN VOTE THAT HISTORICALLY PUTS THEM OVER!

Hillary has driven a racial wedge between herself and African Americans who for the first time have a candidate that could win the nomination, and the White House.
HE IS LEADING IN PLEDGED DELEGATES, POPULAR VOTES, STATES WON, SUPER DELEGATES, AND MONEY.

IF HILLARY GETS THE NOMINATION, SHE WILL LOSE THE GENERAL ELECTION BECAUSE THE MOST RELIABLE MEMBERS OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY, AFRICAN AMERICAN, WILL NEVER VOTE FOR HER!

MOST WILL NOT VOTE AT ALL.

Carter is wrong that Obama would be better served by another VP. Millions upon millions of American women remember that the Clinton years were NOT just more of Bush, and many will write in her name. Obama's protraying the Hillary as old school will make it more difficult to offer her the spot, but that just shows his political inexperience. Ronald Reagan was smart enough to bring Bush on, even after the Voodoo economics comment. They'd both better kiss and make up. It will be a landslide with great coat-tails for the Senate and House.

If you supported Hillary or Obama and then decided to vote for Mc Cain, you obviously don't know where the candidates stand on the issues. Barack and Hillary are only a few feet apart, Mc Cain is miles from either of them.

Let's see, Barack got the majority of the total vote and delegates and more people totally dislike and don't trust Hillary, how does that make her the stronger candidate.

By the way, the worst president in history is about to leave office and not one will ever come close to his poor performance.

Jean   May 21st, 2008 12:59 pm ET

I am a woman, over 60, and like the Bible says: there is a season for all things. There is a time to fight, and a time to concede. There is a time to divide, and a time to unite. There is a time to be selfish, and a time to be selfless and live for a higher goal than self. It is that new time in the primary, and I believe Sen. Clinton has the grit and substance to say, "I take all responsibility for my falling behind in the primary, I now take responsibility for uniting and healing our party behind the nominee."

Elizabeth D, Portland, OR   May 21st, 2008 12:59 pm ET

I would love to see a woman become President. I do not see Hillary as either President, or Vice President on an Obama ticket. Her politics, leadership model/behaviors, and management abilities are disappointing. She has other excellent credentials that will continue to serve her well in the public or private sector. I wish her well. Within a decade or two a woman from the current governor or senate pools likely will become President. Hillary deserves credit for further advancing the reality of a woman President.

Obama - Clinton (or Clinton -Obama) is incompatible and will simply not work. The democrats will unite to the extent possible and people will vote as they wish.

michael in kirksville mo   May 21st, 2008 12:59 pm ET

No, more appropriately, OBAMA may be considered for VP.

Karen from Charlottesville   May 21st, 2008 12:59 pm ET

The West Va and Kentucky polls have demonstrated that these voters will vote for someone they think is dishonest and unfair before they will vote for a black candidate. Hillary Clinton as VP will not sway these voters to be any less racist and would turn many Obama supporters away because she does not represent the values of the Obama campaign.

Anyone but Hillary   May 21st, 2008 12:59 pm ET

Would Hillary have ever won her senate seat if Bill had not cheated on her? THAT is her ONLY experience. Bill repeatedly cheating on her to get the sympathy of the uneducated voters.
The Clintons do not deserve to get back the White House. I am forever turned off voting for a woman politician. All Hillary does is whine and complain. She tries to talk tough, then cries when someone is tough on her. Anyone who has voted for Billary is a fool. I hope all of you vote for McCain and if he wins then you get what you deserve. When Obama wins, then it will make the victory even sweeter. Clinton supporters are mainly HillBillies.

Hillary Clinton should not accept a VP position with Obama if he is the nominee, She is a lot smarter than he is in every catagory. He doesn't even know that we have 50 states not 57 states. The dream ticket idea was the best chance that the democrate had to win the general election a few months back, like a few primeries after super tuesday. But unfortunately Clinton since than has been stumping all over this idea by making Obama weak with attacks during the primeries and caucuses. And we all know why she's doing all this, there is say from a different country, let me put in english: "If I can't eat a plate of food from a meat they are cooking right in front of me, I'd rather spoil the meal so that anyone else can eat it"…. Again what I'm saying it's clear that she is doing everything in her power to damage Obama's chance to win the general election this November so that she can run again in 2012, witch is her last chance to run for Office. Don't get me wrong I strongly respect Clinton but the problem with her is at this point of the campaign, the only way for her to win the dem. nomination is if the superdelegates take away from Obama and give it to her. But again it's politics, since George W. Bush got elected back in 2000 and 2004, I won't be surprise if something like that happen. Cause at the end of the day we the people never have the final words.

stephanie, Washington   May 21st, 2008 12:56 pm ET

Hillary doesn't need to become VP. VP means nothing and she will be more powerful senator than VP. She will re-run in 2012 if Obama defeats McCain. Hillary's supporters will vote for McCain who is more experience than Obama.

Former Obama Supporter   May 21st, 2008 12:56 pm ET

The only way I would vote for Obama is if Hillary is on the ticket, but even then I don't want her on the ticket because Obama would just be using her to get the Hispanic vote, Jewish vote, older voters and the blue collar workers. It is very sad that Obama can't get these voters. Obama doesn't deserve Hillary. If Obama gets the nomination, then Hillary will run again.

chris   May 21st, 2008 12:56 pm ET

Obama's political action committee has doled out more than $694,000 to superdelegates since 2005, the study found, and of the 81 who had announced their support for Obama, 34 had received donations totaling $228,000.

Democrat, NC   May 21st, 2008 12:56 pm ET

How can one vote for McCain if Hillary is not the democratic nominee? Can't you see that McCain is willing to wage a war with Iran? This would be the end of America as we know it; involved in three wars (Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran), close to bankruptcy, and isolated in the world. Obama is in fact the last hope for this country.

Richard (from Puerto Rico)   May 21st, 2008 12:56 pm ET

She is just the Huckabee of the Dems. She is a sore looser, she and many non thinkers feel the we are a monarchy with heirs to the throne, nothing further from the thruth, We are a democracy and as such we need to behave. Vote for the candidate of your preference without smearing the other. Be civil, respectful and do not act like you are not . She is still running just to damage Obama. But at the end it will be like the Kentucky Derby, Eight Belles , ran a good race and after Big Brown, crossed tha finish line she broke both her front ankles and had to be euthanized .and Big Brown, he is just fine ready for Belmont,, which he will win confortably, like Barack Obama, will. A winner making history for the ages, opening doors for the better things yet he will bring with his leadership in the WH. Pope or not. Just wait and see, for seeing is believing. Obama, 2008

Les-Wa   May 21st, 2008 12:56 pm ET

No Hillary, NO MONEY for the DNC, there's a PRIZE to pay. We will see to it Obama will be DEFEATED by McCain. We've had it with FLAWED and WEAK candidate like Obama. We do NOT want extreme liberal to be President, Obama would be WORSE than Bush and MORE dangerous! For over 7 years now we've seen what extremism can do to a nation, Bush have done a LOT of damage into this country; now, you're shoving down our throat another extremist?

HELL NO! WE WON'T VOTE FOR OBAMA!

Dena   May 21st, 2008 12:56 pm ET

Barack, you know we don't want Hillary and neither does your wife. Listen to her, women know these things. I would still vote for you if you picked her but I'm praying that you pick someone from a state that you cannot easily win (Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia).

Audree Weldon   May 21st, 2008 12:56 pm ET

As registered Democrats my and I found it extremely short sighted on the part of the DNC to send us a request for donations when they can't see fit to count our votes in the Florida primary election. Our Republican legislature moved the started date forward for the Presidential primary and as voters we are denied our voice by the DNC. But they sure would like our money to help support them in the denial among other things. Isn't there something wrong with this picture?

marty   May 21st, 2008 12:56 pm ET

Obama is going to find it difficult to find anybody who won't overshadow him. I can think of none. Even a first-time congressman would overshadow Obama. Hillary is way too strong to play second fiddle…

Mike D   May 21st, 2008 12:55 pm ET

CNN how is it you can keep continuing to spin anything to be pro-Clinton? Front page headline says "Clinton would accept VP, says Carter" this is clearly misleading.

A Latte Lover, Seattle, WA   May 21st, 2008 12:55 pm ET

I'm really feeling that the Dem party will not unite this year. I am an Obama supporter, and know that he has called for unity and to be nice to Hillary supporters. I was all for it, until I read some of the comments on these blogs. Hillary supporters threatening, crying sexism, blah blah blah. You people forget that if Hillary somehow does pull this out, you would need us. At this point, I can say for certain that I would never support this lying woman. I started out the primaries not liking her very well, but still would have supported her. Now, I simply detest her and can't even stand to look at her or listen to her.

I think you will find that your threats will NOT work!!!

Steve - Philadelphia   May 21st, 2008 12:55 pm ET

He would have to hire a food taster. She's completely untrustworthy and unethical. After hearing Jim Webb on NPR yesterday, I'd hope Barack would choose him.

silence do good   May 21st, 2008 12:55 pm ET

from Gary: "I don't want her involved in any way nor her hard core women supporters who have as their only agenda …."

Yes Gary it is sad when a candidate agressively identifies with a segment of the population that feels they are "due" for their "type" of person, and will overlook any faults, and divide the party.

Note to Ozombies - that is sarcasm. At all all costs, keep those women away from power. Obama was liberal right?

Jefferson   May 21st, 2008 12:54 pm ET

Obama supporters should have more respect for Hillary supporters. Obama can't win without them. If they despise Hillary and their supporters then many people from Hillary's side will be glad to cast their vote to McCain.

Rethink your attitudes and if Obama is smart, he should swallow his pride and have Hillary on the ticket.

chris   May 21st, 2008 12:54 pm ET

obama "supporters" should keep up their disrespect for Senator Clinton……the best way to get out of your hole is to keep digging…..

Glad to hear the views of one of the most incompetent Presidents this country has seen. Who cares what he thinks?

Kandi   May 21st, 2008 12:54 pm ET

The woman is not going to cause any problems after the nomination of Barack Obama is official. She cannot go down as the one that "prevented" him from winning it. Once she concedes she will basically have to do everything in her power to help him in the g.e. The saddest part of all of this week's ongoing "need to console Hillary voters" is that in and around it we have lost one of the greatest Democratic minds, and are reeling from the news of Ted Kennedy's diagnosis. Yet, we are still making front page the news about the need to let her play it out. Let her go to the end. Let this heal her voters. Give me a break! I would never ever ever ever consider voting for Hillary in a Democratic primary, but I can tell you I would run to the voting precinct and I would encourage my friends to come with me to vote for her in a general election against any republican. Grow up Hillary supporters.

NC for Hillary   May 21st, 2008 12:54 pm ET

I won't vote for Obama UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE. His character is the biggest jOke in American history alone. Nevermind his total lack of experience. You Obamicans got yourself a nice Mike Dukakis all built up with no legs to stand on.
I also for the 1st time supported a candidate HRC this year, and WILL NOT vote for Obama even with HRC as VP, for above reasons, my conscience won't allow it. DNC won't be seeing any $$ from me either.
I will not vote for McCain either, just will not vote for president at all, unless the green party or something comes up with a good candidate.

Juliemn   May 21st, 2008 12:53 pm ET

Obama is choosing Oprah as his vp. Wright as his secretary of state.

Obamas ;change is a comming to America:I suggest the obama followers to go live in Cuba for a couple months to get used to this NEW CHANGE!!!!

karen   May 21st, 2008 12:53 pm ET

I do not want Hillary as President (to many ties to Washington and lobbiests) but as VP she could undo those ties by saying "her boss says NO" and we have a unified Democratic ticket. Good idea!!! Just do not want her on top!!!! Think of the champaign we could have crisscrossing this country with the Obama's and Clinton's!!!!!

Sue   May 21st, 2008 12:53 pm ET

I would never ever vote for Hillary. WHY?

All she does is lie.
She stayed with a man who cheated on her with many many women. Bill had NO respect or love for Hillary yet she stayed with him for her own political gains. NO MORALS
All she does is lie.
She's run the most negitive campaign in history.
All she does is lie.
She can't manage her own campaign let alone a country.
Did I mention she lies?
She Failed the people of New York as a senator. The state lost thousands and thousands of jobs.
Nafta
The war in Iraq
My god, the list goes on and on.
Again, the lies !
She has divided the democratics more than anyone else.
She is destroying the party, so very selfish.

She can't be trusted to be a president. There's no way she would win in November.
The people won't forget what harm she's done.

chris   May 21st, 2008 12:53 pm ET

how's this for positive support? the only way obama has even a sliver of a chance of winning in November is if Senator Clinton is the Vice Presidential nominee

Tammy - KCMO   May 21st, 2008 12:53 pm ET

There are much better choices for VP that Obama could make than Clinton that would do a better job of uniting the party.
I for one, can not see myself voting for Clinton in any capacity. She has done to much to divide the party. Also, I don't think the Clintons would be satisfied in taking a backseat to Obama and would be overstepping their bounds on a daily basis. If Bill wasn't with Hillary she'd have a better chance. However, if she didn't have Bill with her she probably wouldn't have gotten this far to begin with.
When the Democratic convention takes place I still have visions of them pulling the Clinton's off the floor in straight jackets. I don't think either of them imagined that the nomination wouldn't be handed to them on a silver platter. In all reality at one time it probably could have but between the lies, the party divisiveness, Bill's playboy antics, stealing of the silverware and dishes, whitewater (?) and more I just can't see a reason to put them back in that position. Make no mistake, it would be a package deal with Hill & Bill. With everything that has gone on the past 8 years why bring back old issues and problems?
My view when I voted was anyone but the Clintons and I haven't changed my mind.
Obama has fresh views and thinks logically. This is something we haven't seen in a long time. He has my vote. I just hope he uses that logical thinking and chooses a less devisive running mate.

Kathy   May 21st, 2008 12:53 pm ET

Obama is a astute guy, there is no way he is going to choose a woman who is manipulative and at best will continue to undermine him. The choice should be for the best person to represent the democratic party and Obama's vision for change. Clearly that is not Hil-Bill Clinton.

ROD COULOMBE   May 21st, 2008 12:53 pm ET

I can see no plus in have Mrs. Clinton as VP. She would not fit the role and her husband would stir the water as he can not keep his mouth shut.

HOPE   May 21st, 2008 12:52 pm ET

This primary is dragging on so long that people are fighting for all the wrong reasons. The reason to cast a vote in an election/primary is because you support the ideas of the candidate. I don't know that there will ever be a "perfect" candidate, but you have to look at the issues and see who your beliefs are more in line with.

In regards to people voting for McCain instead of Obama because they are such staunch Hillary supporters, I ask you this: Why? Is it
because you don't agree with Obama's policies and stances on the issues? Or is it simply because it is not Hillary? Do you really support McCain's policies? I just ask that people look at the issues and where the candidates stand and then make an informed decision. Votes should not be based on race/gender/age/etc, but on the issues. Remember that the president doesn't work alone either.

If Obama gets the nomination, I just ask all the Clinton supporters that say they will not vote for Obama to think long and hard before they either stay home or cast a vote for McCain. Think about what McCain stands for and how it will affect you/your family/your community/the country as a whole.

Hillary is proud of a boy selling his bike and games for her….how possibly she could take it? she has more than enough money to lend herself 11 million dollars and was greedy to take 400 dollars of a little boy? so disappointing..

Jagdish , Vancouver,Canada   May 21st, 2008 12:52 pm ET

Politely & politically correctly said that Hillary Clinton is not the presidential material !!

I agree….she does not know where to draw the in quest to reside in the White House….any means would do as long as she can get there…

Megan   May 21st, 2008 12:52 pm ET

She can totally kill the Dems chances by saying she wants the VP role. She can be incredibly effective as a Senator I am sure. If she asks for VP, and Obama declines, she again makes him look bad. And why on earth would Obama want BIll & Hill as his VP? Yikes.

Chan   May 21st, 2008 12:51 pm ET

I remember the Carter years!

It was a VERY bad time for our nation and it is the reason that the majority of Americans called by the pundits as "Moderates" or "Conservatives" will not vote for another Left Wing Liberal, no matter how popular they may seem.

We can't afford to have 4 years of "nothing". There is a lot of actual WORK that needs to be done to get us out of this mess we are in now.

It will take an experienced President that knows what they are doing to move us forward or "change".

The Democratic party is being held hostage by these "militant feminists" and hard-core Hillary supporters who are basically saying that change the rules so that Hillary wins or make Hillary the VP, or else we vote for McCain. What a shame!! Is this what you call democracy? If you can't accept defeat , take your ball and go play with yourself!!!

chris   May 21st, 2008 12:51 pm ET

obama used racial politics to unfairly and falsely accuse Senator Clinton of somehow disrespecting MLK when she merely acknowledged the contributions made by LBJ to the Civil Rights Movement…….SHAME ON OBAMA THE HYPOCRITE!

Wendy   May 21st, 2008 12:50 pm ET

Terry,

Al Sharpton is an activist, so he wouldn't be any different than Hillary is right now. She's an activist and her mission is to destroy the Democratic Convention because she is losing, and is not the front runner. So your crack at being funny, really has a ring of truth. Of course Barack is a serious candidate who will select the best person for his ticket and we all know that's not Hillary.

Mauri   May 21st, 2008 12:50 pm ET

How anybody can say that Obama will not ask Hillary Clinton to be his VP candidate should he win the top spot, is beyond me. And all you Clinton bashers who self-righteously say the job wouldn't be offered to her, had better listen up. Senator Clinton has won five of the last seven primaries — the last two (W. VA and Kentucky) being virtual whippings. So Obama may have no choice if he wishes to get elected. There were REASONS these people supported her, not the least of which was that they just thought she would make the better president. All the above said, I think the last thing she would want is a shared ticket with the inexperienced one.

End Game   May 21st, 2008 12:50 pm ET

The ONLY ticket will work is CLIINTON '/ Obama ticket. She has the states and demographics to win, he is still chasing them down.
Obama on top of any ticket loses, his best path to the White House is VP now and 2016 contest.
I am quite sure 30% or better of Clinton supporters go to McCain for the experience and the contry sake, and McCain VP will certainly will be key.
I rather see Clinton as VP to McCain than to Obama, just not a winning ticket with Obama on top.
32 year voting democrat

To all of you vowing not to vote for Obama because of his supporters:

WHAT!?!?! What is WRONG with you? Last I checked, it's about the CANDIDATES, not who or who is not supporting them or how enthusiastic they are or what they say.

This is just plain lunacy!

John from LA   May 21st, 2008 12:50 pm ET

What I don't get is why the need to stop this now-FDR's first run went into the fifth day of the Dem. convention-Ted Kennedy went until Aug-what are the Obamabots afraid of???-Let this all play out-It's nonsense and hype that the Dems will rip apart-We need a very SEASONED person in there-I bet Warren Buffet(who just came out for Obama) wouldn't appoint a novice as CEO to one of his businesses. This isn't American Idol-who can fill stadiums or give a great speech- I'm looking for someone who'll be relentless and get us out of this mess!

Remember-Obama needs Hillary supporters to make the general election his! and by the way his supports post hateful messages-we'll let's just say-beware of people switching over-I am-and I have to go with experience as the main reason-A real Dem. just doesn't vote because a person is a Dem-he/she votes for the best qualified-Obama just isn't. I thought Dems were for the people on the margins of society-poor isn't anymore-this isn't about white or black-it's about the poor and all of us helping them-not ignoring them as Obama has done with WV and KY.

Webster 208   May 21st, 2008 12:50 pm ET

Whatever happened to the best ex-President we ever knew? How does he know that Hillary would want to be V.P. to Obama? Has he been authorized to speak for Hillary, or is this just another scheme to let people get used to the idea that the primaries are over before they are actually over? If Democrats do not want a protracted selection process, they should redesign their Primary process, instead of pressuring, and heckling a genuine and viable candidate to quit even before there is a nominee. These democrats have been asking Hillary to quit since Iowa. Everyone just wants to shortcut the process, because following it will weaken Obama. Does this make any sense?

Texan W/Woman for Obama   May 21st, 2008 12:50 pm ET

No way. I read all the blogs from Hillary Hags and they don't think Obama is electable (meaning black)…doesn't have enough experience…they will vote for McCain if Hillary doesn't win the nomination…YET THEY WANT HER FOR HIS VP. They want Hillary to WORK FOR OBAMA? Does any of that make sense to anyone with half a brain?

She has polarized her followers to the extent they are blinded by her rage in losing this nomination. They actually believe Fl and MI should be seated by HILLARY'S RULES forgetting about all the other 48 states much less that the game started months ago.

Hillary's so called democaratic process is disgusting. I simply cannot believe anyone running for the highest office in this country has so little regard for the basic principles on which this democracy was founded. Yeah let's just throw out all the rules and go by Hill-Billie law.

Please stop insulting Americans' intelligence by saying it is all about the POPULAR vote which counts Puerto Rico (no mention of Guam now) when they aren't even sates and cannot vote in the GE. Stop insulting Americans' intelligence by saying ALL VOTES SHOULD COUNT when you leave out huge blocks of voters in caucus states and don't have the other candidate's name on the ballot.

TXCIT   May 21st, 2008 12:50 pm ET

Obama and Hilary would make a great p & vp as it would ensure a Republic victory. On the other hand, if I was Obama and selected Hillary as my VP, I would have myself surrounded with security guards 24 hours a day, have a taste tester for my food and drink, and never never never turn my back on her. Too many mysterious deaths when her husband, and I sure the term loosely, was president. So the surest way for her to become president is accept the VP position, then Obama dies.

Susan   May 21st, 2008 12:50 pm ET

Clinton has disqualified herself from VP by her mean-spirited, racist attacks on Obama and his supporters.

Besides, she doesn't get him any states he couldn't get on his own in the general election - KY and WV will undoubtedly go Republican.

Let's get a VP who can nail down Ohio and the rust belt.

Laura   May 21st, 2008 12:49 pm ET

I really hope Sen Obama does not consider HRC for VP. It would go against everything he has been saying about changing Washington. You will be getting 2 people in the VP spot. Not only HRC but her husband Bill as well. We are in deep trouble. I would not be suprised Hillary tried to run the show once she was asked. She did not enter this race to be 2nd. She will push Obama to seat certain people in cabinet positions and to handle certain issues. With all that "tenacity" she has where do you think it's going to go once she is on the ticket?

Tee   May 21st, 2008 12:49 pm ET

GREG FROM POTTSTOWN- saying obama shares the views of rev Wright is ridiculous, stop using this a an excuse not to vote for a black man. If we take that attitude the there shouldn't be anyone working for the government. I sure there has been influence on the part of their parents and grandparents. Martin Luther King was murdered only 40 years ago. A time when it was politically correct to hate African Americans who are also americans. How could you judge Rev Wright and not judge your own people.

In the name of democracy ,Hillary has proven to be unfit for any elected office.Lies ,deceit, smoke screens, party & nation divisive tactics while engaging in much of the behavior she accuses her opponent of. She really hasn't done anything for NY . All her & Bill have ever done is a lot of lip service when you look closely. I'd like to hear more about her accepting donations from Iran supporters& their involvement in the situation w/ paul of Calif for starters.

Sean T. from PA   May 21st, 2008 12:49 pm ET

If Hillary was the Governor of Ohio or Florida and not married to Bill Clinton, she'd be perfect. The only way she'd help Obama is by ensuring most of her people would support Obama. But she has claimed she will do all she can to help the nominee, anyway. Her publicly campaigning with him and his wonderful, party-mending speeches will help Democrats realize that this can be an easy win if they unite. If Obama plays that card and gets Nunn, former GA Gov, or Rendell (a Clinton supporter), or Sebelius (a female), he do much more for himself than suffice with a dysfunctional Obama-Clinton White House.

Jean   May 21st, 2008 12:49 pm ET

Hillary Clinton would destroy Obama's chances in the GE.

The Republicans would come out in droves to keep the Clintons out of the White House.

I would not vote for Obama if he put Hillary on the ticket. The Clintons are criminals.

That is why the Republicans are pushing for Hillary on the ticket. That is their only chance to beat Obama.

No WAY!   May 21st, 2008 12:48 pm ET

I wouldn't trust her or her husband on Obama's ticket.
They have done every thing in their power to render him unelectable including releasing the tapes of REV WRIGHT to drive a wedge between he and the so-called White Blue collar workers (Uneducated racist morons).

They would do everything in their power to undermine him, or even set him up so she could be crowned Queen of America…President.

The fact that she and her husband are happily accepting the votes of confessed BIGOTS and RACISTS really speaks volumes as to their moral fiber.

Obama does not need RACISTS in "Blue collar" clothing to win the Presidency, HE WILL WIN THE PRESIDENCY INSPITE OF THEM!

Hillary, put on your boots, your ten-gallon hat and strap on your holster with your six-shooters. Meet with Obama and tell him you don't want to be his v.p. and you don't need his money because you will be running as an independent and that you will be writing a tell all book about all those you "know" since coming to Washingston! I bet you could tell some good stories and recup all of the money you had to loan your campaign!

President Carter hopefully is right. Picking Hillary Clinton as his VP would be a contradiction of everything Obama stands for. If you ever watched the show "Prison Break" the woman that makes it to the presidency there makes me think "Wow, that is Hillary Clinton" evil, deceitful, immoral, scheming and do anything to get and keep power. When anyone is caught in a lie and then they claim that they "Misspoke" this is utter rubbish. Hillary Clinton seems willing to say or do anything. Whether right or wrong, true or false nothing is to get in her way to satisfy her ego. When she claims she wants to serve the American people, it is only a fallacy as the only person she wants to serve is herself. If I was an American I would surely put all my efforts behind Obama.

It is a shame that people are so foolish that they would rather suffer for another four years rather than go with change.

Well all those who want to vote for McCain because they support Clinton and she is not the nomiee are so foolish.

Clinton and Obama are basically on the same page in terms of
healthcare, education, economy but I guess that is not sufficient. All I can say I hope they don't complain when, their taxes are increased, still no proper healthcare, loose their homes and more of their jobs get shipped off somewhere else and of course the tax payers money that is spent for this Iraqi war continues and more of our children die in a war that should have never been waged.

I read all these comments and they are haters from both fronts Clinton and Obama yall need to just stop and band together to unify so that the Democratics can head to the White House come January 2009

There are many, many good candidates for VP for Obama including Sen. Jim Webb, Gen. Clark, Sen. Dodd, Gov. Richardson, Gov. Rendell. This is just a tiny bit of a long list. If Sen. Clinton wants to be on the VP list, she can take positive steps to support Obama.

As a true feminist who is outdone by all of these bitter 2nd-wavers claiming they'll vote for McCain and set women back by 100 years if Hillary is not the nominee, and as a young black woman who is appalled by the Clintons' race-baiting and suggestions that black people should somehow be grateful for the Nothingness that they did for us way back when, I am begging you to keep her far away from your ticket.

There are more progressive vice-presidents, male or female, to be found!!!

Florida democrat   May 21st, 2008 12:47 pm ET

Considering how divided the votes are now b/t the two I do not understand how anyone could think that Clinton on the ticket would not help his campaign. Yes, she takes lobby money and they certainly have slightly different views on how to achieve the same goals; but they are both consistently getting votes from two very different cohorts. Together they would be unstoppable.

Awwww come on…. Charlie Brown has his Snoopy… The Skipper has his Gilligan…. Why cant Obama have his Hillary???? NOT!
OBAMA 08 WITHOUT HILLARY!

FactCheck   May 21st, 2008 12:46 pm ET

Go ahead, vote for McCain. Us Obama supporters will survive since most of us are well off, have little or no financial difficulties and the current economic conditions don't faze many of us. Don't come crying when McCain raises gas prices, outsources your jobs, cut your healthcare, get rid of education and medical research and continue the war.

OBAMA/CARTER 08!

chris   May 21st, 2008 12:46 pm ET

let me remind obama "supporters" not to be arrogant, ignorant, racist and sexist…….oops, too late!

Jane   May 21st, 2008 12:46 pm ET

Clinton deservs president nominee. She is the one most voters voted for, not Obama. Why did Obama supporters thought Obama have the right to nominate who the VP should be.

SERGIO   May 21st, 2008 12:46 pm ET

She would never accept because she is going to be the next president. If she would accept the VP position she would lose tons of fans including myself and my brother. Let this guy sink by himself and run independent.

chris   May 21st, 2008 12:45 pm ET

considering that's probably the only way many millions of Senator Clinton supporters would vote for obama, its his only chance of having a chance to win the White House

Running on Empty   May 21st, 2008 12:45 pm ET

Hillary for VP, please. She has no thoughts for her supporters other than what they can give her. Same for her husband. She's a parasite, a leech on society, and has too many personalities for me to count!

No McBush   May 21st, 2008 12:45 pm ET

I think the true Democrats, not Rush's Operation chaos fakes, should stop any infighting and look at the bigger picture.

There is no way in hell this country can survive the continuation of George Bush’s economic and Iraq strategies. If McSame was to be elected we would go from a recession to a depression, and we would end up in a war with Iran and Syria.

As an Obama supporter, allow Hillary to finish out the primaries as is her right. I just ask this of Hillary, please take the high road from now on a wage your fight for what counts, the American people.

Barack will probably be the nominee, if he does pick Hillary, then as democrats we should unite and support them both. If Obama picks someone else, I ask the Clintons to do what's best for the Democratic Party and this Nation and put all of their support behind Barack and his VP choice to send them to the Whitehouse.

Jane   May 21st, 2008 12:45 pm ET

The problem is that the more Obama tries to unify the party, the more Hillary keeps bringing up issues that causes her flock of women and blue collar men to hate Obama more. Things like race, the latest being sexist. Why can she not attempt to win on her own merit without blaming it on one thing on the other. This is another evidence of her divisiveness and polarization. How many times have you heard Barack say that she cannot win without the blacks and college-educated. I am so surprised to see her stoop so low to bring the issue of sexism recently. Shame on you, Hillary. Please just go away.

Why she is not winning amongst the college educated is because they are smart enough to see through all her gimmicks, lies and manipulations and do not fall for all that.

Lucas   May 21st, 2008 12:45 pm ET

Although I don't particularly like Hillary, I think it makes a lot of sense for Obama to atleast OFFER her the VP spot. And I do think she would accept.

In addition to uniting the party, and pulling many of Hillary's supporters into the obama camp, having the clinton machine and their rolodex in the white house will help Barack's plans materialize, from a legislative perspective.

Bart   May 21st, 2008 12:45 pm ET

She would be poison to his efforts for real change. She is in this for herself and Billy as has always been the case. We don’t need any more Lies from our leaders as we have the last 7 years!
Enough of the "Clantons" and their games. America needs to move on!

Saint Paul   May 21st, 2008 12:45 pm ET

Sorry, he does not need her. She only brings much of the same old Politics.
And honestly in my opinion I can not vote for anyone who voted for this WAR.
Barack or Ron Paul maybe even Nader are a good choice for real (honest) change.

Tom Pascale   May 21st, 2008 12:45 pm ET

I don't understand all these posts from Hillary supporters who threaten to vote against Obama. After a close pennant race, it is customary to root against the team that knocked your team out of the playoffs. But this ain't sports. Hopefully by November everyone will settle down and actually vote on the issues.

elvispresleyObamo   May 21st, 2008 12:45 pm ET

»»»OBAMA!VICTORY!…OBAMA!…HURRAH!…the party is…on.

NHNV   May 21st, 2008 12:44 pm ET

If Obama is elected President-it wouldn't be so bad because the real truth of the matter is: Kerry and Kennedy would be defacto presidents: the real power behind the thrown. Obama would make pretty international eye candy. Now that Kennedy is ill who would replace him in wisdom and influence. Also, when did any other candidate ever reject the racists who voted for him. Leave HRC alone with your insulting demands.

charlotte   May 21st, 2008 12:44 pm ET

I agree..Hillary is way too strong for the VP position. Everyone would look to her for answers and he would end up a lame duck. I don't know where he will find a running mate that would be weaker then he is. Maybe Dodd or Richardson? I will write Hillary Clinton on my ballot in November, I will not vote for a Mondale clone.

Steven   May 21st, 2008 12:44 pm ET

This is hysterical. Does no one realize that when women vote, Democrats win? Does everyone REALLY believe that the 9+ million women who've voted for Hillary so far will "fall in line" behind the man, just as they have their whole lives?

Not so fast.

Proud American   May 21st, 2008 12:44 pm ET

Those that are still trying to make the arguement of wanting some one with more experience. I'll take smarts and common sense any day over experience. Cheney has 100 times more experience than Hillary and Obama put together… and you can see what thats gotten us.

fred   May 21st, 2008 12:44 pm ET

Reading these Obama comments…these are educated people, or what country are they from???

Eleanor   May 21st, 2008 12:44 pm ET

sorry to disagree but Bush is by a long shot the worst president in American history By FAR
Jimmy Carter should be respected and held in honor for all the
PEACE he has strived for in the world and still continues to strive for
Sorry I would take a president who advocates for peace(Who also has anobel peace prize to prove it) any day over one whose first instinct is to drop bombs on his fellowman
God Bless you president Carter for all the good you have strived for
There are some people who admire and respect your endeavours
and opinions sir
