Obama is beginning his search for a running mate.
Obama is beginning his search for a running mate.

(CNN) — Barack Obama is quietly beginning his search for a running mate.

A veteran Democratic activist in Washington confirms to CNN's John King that former Fannie Mae CEO Jim Johnson has accepted Obama's request for him to begin a screening/selection process for the No. 2 spot.

The news was first reported by the Associated Press.

Johnson performed the same role in 2004 and 1984 for then-Democratic presidential nominees John Kerry and Walter Mondale.

The activist, a party operative who has been involved in democratic presidential campaigns and conventions dating back more than 20 years, said it was his information that the process was "at a very early point but that within the campaign itself they have been informally thinking about it for awhile."

Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton declined to comment on the report.

Mr Obama is doing exactly right, go ahead and begin the search for a honest, fair and trustworth person. The Clintons should not be considered.

Tim from New York   May 22nd, 2008 10:34 am ET

As a Clinton supporter who is undecided about whom to vote for in the upcoming election, the VP choice is going to seriously help my vote, and I doubt that I am the only one who feels this way.

Even though many Clinton voters say they will never vote for Obama, many will come around to him. (I actually voted for him in the primary) People often ask why and how. I tell them that before Super Tuesday I was undecided and leaned toward Clinton, but there was something about Barack Obama that as a young person, you couldn't resist.

After super tuesday, he lost his luster in my eyes. I am really trying to find a reason to support Obama in the fall, but the negatives keep coming out in my eyes….maybe a VP choice will push me over the edge

Thoughts?

OBAMA   May 22nd, 2008 10:34 am ET

Please DON'T PICK HILLARY CLINTON!!! PLEASE!! IS NOT WHAT YOU STAND FOR!!

Chris from San Antonio   May 22nd, 2008 10:34 am ET

What arrogance from Obama!
Just because he holds the lead in delegates, superdelegates, states won, popular vote and is 60 delegates away from the nomination is no reason to overstep his bounds.
Do we really want such a far-thinking man as our President?

slash   May 22nd, 2008 10:34 am ET

You Obama-ites, say what you will, but Hillary had better be at least offered the role, or you can expect MANY of us over 45 working women to NOT be there in the Fall. If he's such a great uniter, working across party lines and across oceans, you would think he could figure out a way to work with a fellow Democrat who's given her life to the betterment of America.

Tim in NC   May 22nd, 2008 10:33 am ET

Marilyn (and all you other idiots out there),

So you think that continuing the policies of the current administration, via voting for McSame, or not voting at all) is better for this country than putting a Democrat in the White House who may not hold all of your values, but will DEFINITELY change the course this country is going down?!

If so, then you have no right to call yourself a democrat!

Steve Barnett   May 22nd, 2008 10:33 am ET

Still amazing to see the Obama haters out there making up reasons why there would never vote for him. Lack of experience, elitist etc etc.
I suppose daddy's boy Bush had a lot of experience. Good guy to have a beer with though.
Grow up people.

Brown   May 22nd, 2008 10:33 am ET

Smart. We can't wait for Hillary to figure out how to add the math in her favor. This campaign has always been a step ahead. Ready from day one.

Jack   May 22nd, 2008 10:33 am ET

Not sure if I trust a guy who chose runningmates for 2 LOSING TICKETS!!!

Although the problem wasn't John Edwards… it was the LOSER elitist John Kerry.

And I don't think Obama's runningmate will be the problem…. it'll be Obama and his status as a clueless, naive rookie!

LET'S PICK A WINNING TICKET THIS TIME!

GO Hillary!

Angela   May 22nd, 2008 10:33 am ET

If Hillary is not the VP, then I'm leaving the democratic party and voting for McCain….

I can't stand obama - Hillary, to me, is the WINNER and so if she doesn't end up on the ticket - I won't stay in the party….

I've been a democrat all my life, but this entire process has been disappointing and illegal - when you look at how the caucuses were handled.

Life long Republican voting Democrat for the first time in my life this year - and my whole family too.

Funny, b/c you aren't going to be the nominee.

Obama=Affirmative Action.

Why would the person with no experience be the nominee? B/C black people are voting for him 90%?

Hillary/Rendell 08
Hillary/Bayh 08
Hillary/Ford 08

These sound a lot better to me!

Tommie R. from Maryland   May 22nd, 2008 10:33 am ET

Think of this as a relay race. The Republicans are off and running. Obama is at the relay point, waiting for the baton from Hillary…and she's taking her sweet time about it. He can't wait for Hillary forever! John McCain will be too far ahead to catch! It is time to move forward so the DEMOCRATS stand a chance of winning the race!

Concerned Canadian   May 22nd, 2008 10:33 am ET

Obama acting like a smug Chicago thug as usual. Ya go ahead and pick a running mate. You haven't secured anything yet . You do everything without ' pre-conditions " anyway…so why " change " right Barack ?

Concerned Democrat   May 22nd, 2008 10:32 am ET

A little premature.

Indiana Ed   May 22nd, 2008 10:32 am ET

James   May 22nd, 2008 10:32 am ET

I would say John Edwards. Chris since you are a complete idiot and didn't have nothing good to say, your message should be deleted. Why don't people answer the questions rather than say bias stuff? If you are another nominee supporter don't answer questions on other people that you didn't vote for. People show how stupid they are when I hear these negative comments. Okay Bush supporters I am calling you all out. Its all about the DNC party.

nita in houston   May 22nd, 2008 10:32 am ET

Pam…How is it pompous and presumptuous to do a job that needs to be done? John McCain is the presumptive Republican nominee and he's also started the process too. Do you think that's pompous and presumptuous? I don't know who you're supporting out of the 3 or even if you're supporting anyone at all, but it sounds to me like you're in denial like most "Clinton" supporters who thinks that she still has a shot at the nomination.

We know that's not going to happen and that Obama will be the leader, and winner, of this party in the fall! So can we just please move on and take care of the business at hand which is defeating John McBush and the rest of the Repubs. in Nov.

Obama '08!!!!!!!!!!!!

If not Hillary....then McCain   May 22nd, 2008 10:31 am ET

Who cares, I'm more interested in McCain's choice now. At least he McCain) IS the PRESUMPTIVE nominee. More posturing before the May 31 rules committee meeting….hummmmm, think he wants to force the vote….who would ever vote against ________________?

ron   May 22nd, 2008 10:31 am ET

Anybody but Clinton because she'll codt you votes and double cross your administration, She's so slippery that she avoided questioning about her losing the Black vote with her"hard-working Americans, blue collar whites comment. not one Black person in America would vote for anything with her name on it. Of course the press is focused on can Obams win the white vote, which I see as white sore losers setting the table to try and steal the nomination, I'd suggest that nothing like that happen, and Ed Rendell, and the like go cry intheirbeer.

E. C., Houston, Texas   May 22nd, 2008 10:31 am ET

Obama is SO HIGHLY UNQUALIFIED to be the Nominee, he had better think in terms of all the qualities he doesn't possess like Government Experience, Foreign Affairs Experience, Leadership Experience, and ad infinitum. Obama has NOTHING to show for His 3 years in the Senate. Why do Voters think he can run this country? For a Candidate who Cannot offer a Decent Resume of Accomplishments to Voters, or any Future Ideas or Goals for a platform, except Two Words, Hope and Change, Obama had better find the person who SHOULD be sitting in His Shoes. Obama is the Most Unqualified Candidate who has ever attempted to run for National Office. He LACKS every quality that is necessary. It is FOOLHARDY and RIDICULOUS for the Democrats to Believe that Obama could and should be the Nominee. Obama hasn't a Clue.

Jeremy   May 22nd, 2008 10:31 am ET

This guy cannot win, democrats wake up before it too late. In good conscience, I cannot vote for Obama who has done nothing to merit the position he is seeking. If he was running for governor or something, but this is the highest position in the land.

Willam from Texas   May 22nd, 2008 10:31 am ET

Those of you selecting Edwards, didn't you know he's not interested?

Hillary is the only choice for VP. Unification of the party cannot be without her. He, at least, better ask her first, or he won't get my vote.

I know a lot of people feel like Hillary has earn the VP spot, however, Hillary don't "bring anything to the table" or does not support Obama's ideology of change and taking the high road when dealing with negativity. That’s like Batman picking the Joker over several available Robins to fight against crime with. I just don’t see that happening. Anybody, but Hillary.
Maybe:

Edwards
Sebelius
Colin Powell
Richardson
Webb
Hagel
Anybody but Hillary!

Dave in TX   May 22nd, 2008 10:30 am ET

It's a shame that this primary has destroyed all of the Clinton's credibility. I would have liked to have seen her on the ticket at the beginning of this. But after all of Bill and Hillary's lies, pandering and dirty tactics, they have made that impossible. They have both (Hilary and Bill) done an excellent job of destroying their legacy.

Folks, not to be a spoiler, but John Edwards has flatly denied wanting the VP spot. However, he does seem somewhat interested in the Attorney General spot. I like Sebelius or Webb for VP, Richardson as Secretary of State, and Hillary should consider a Supreme Court Justice posistion, where she'd have all the power she could ever want.

The perfect choice would be Jimmy Carter. Jimmy could be our chief negotiator with all of the terrorist leaders. Additionally, he could be put in charge of build new housing for all of those poor, blue collar workers who have no intention of voting for Obama this November. Yea, that's the ticket, Twiddle-E-Dee and Twiddle-E-Dumb running the country.

He can look as much as he wants and pick whoever he wants (duh we all know its Richardson the traitor), he's still going to lose in Nov.

I hope he picks Hillary. I didnt support her, but we need HER support. I just wish she stopped campaigning so he could make the offer. One has to respect the millions of voters who would like to see her in the new administration. And the Clinton years were'nt so bad after all. What we do have to do is to make sure that our leader delivers CHANGE and thats why we elected Barack Obama.

Sam   May 22nd, 2008 10:29 am ET

Wow to the comment from Chuck saying Obama using using a playbook from Rove… I believe it was the Clinton camp using rove to explain why they should be the nominee… Do you not read the news?

I am from Va and I think Webb would be an amazing choice. I fear a Hillary presidency, so I pray twice a day for the lord to deliver Obama to the white house. Clinton is manipulative, deceitful, and focused only on herself. She doesn't really care about anything unless it gets her where she wants… I still find it funny she pushes her "lead" in the popular vote by saying EVERY VOTE COUNTS when she is in fact omitting caucuses…. So again, every vote counts as long as it makes her look good. I am truly saddened Americans are supporting her and it makes me sad to be a citizen of this great nation when i see the number of people feed on her lies and corruption.

ANYONE BUT HILLARY. I am scared of her, but I am not of McCain. I think SHE will start WW3…. SHE will be the end of who we are. If Obama is not the nominee, then my money and support go to McCain.

ANYONE BUT HILLARY

Chris11   May 22nd, 2008 10:29 am ET

I really don't want to see Hillary as his running mate… She is too good for him. It is outrageous to even suggest that she would run second to this first term, inexperienced senator.

Besides all of you who say McCain doesn't have a chance, think again. All he needs to do is take Ohio and New Mexico (which is juxtaposed with Arizona) and he has it. Guaranteed he can do this, guaranteed Obama will not meet the magic number… AGAIN!!!

Hillary Clinton for President!

By the way, I'm not voting for McCain… but I will be writing in Hillary Clinton on my ballot!!!!

New Day   May 22nd, 2008 10:29 am ET

Pam - I dont think its pompous and presumptuous. If Hillary thinks she's going to win, she should start thinking about that, too. Only 2 months to the convention, you know.

Chuck R - whats left to count? by the time June rolls around, Obama will have enough delegates to have clinched the nomination. I'm not being arrogant just stating fact. With Edwards getting 15% of the vote in Florida and those delegates would likely go to Obama, we'd be looking at a near 50-50 split (50-48 for Hillary, to be exact). Even if she got all of her delegates in MI and Obama didnt get any (which I doubt anyone would see as fair), she would be 90 or so delegates short with 86 left in play.

I understand many have a deep connection with Hillary. I would be happy with either candidate but the facts are that she will be short on delegates. So, most Hillary supporters are going to have to do some soul searching. Will you vote for a candidated that shares (for the most part) your candidates ideals, or will you vote for the polar opposite and put your personal pride over your country's future?

It doesn't matter who the VP pick is. there is no way he'll get the 270 electoral votes he needs to win. Hillary's people will vote for McCain. I know I will. There is no question about it. He's just going through the motions. I going to create a website for all of Hillay's voters to go to and support. We can endure 4 years of McCain in preparation for 2012 for Hillary. No Obama in 2008. And you Obama supporters keep thinking that Clinton supporters will forget everything done to her and come home to the Democratic Party. We won't forget and you will get a rude awakening in the fall. A great majority of us will never support that man, and I'm black, who lives in aswing state. Penn. Go figure! go McCain!

Karen   May 22nd, 2008 10:29 am ET

Mark   May 22nd, 2008 10:29 am ET

Hey Chuck R, wake up, Hillary had just as much to do with those states not being counted as Obama did. I

f she really cared for the principal of the matter she shouldn't have signed & agreed to strip their delegates and spoken up then. She is constantly trying to move the goalpoasts & she is really starting to hurt the party now. The superdelegates need to wake up & start committing so this can all be over before it gets really ugly.

Great! Always being Pro-active……However, it would be his WORSE presidental decision if he puts Sen. Clinton on the ticket.

Everyone talks about his lack of support from her supporters. At least he is getting somewhere between 35 - 40 percent from her big state wins. Has anyone asked why she can't get more than 7% (ave.) of the African American vote? Hmmmmmm……..

Sen. Obama risks not getting full support from them if she's on the ticket. They are a larger force than her supporters.

Sen. Clinton is not worth the time or effort to have on the ticket. She will, as well as Bill, will undermine his agenda.

Right now with her contant pushing of her agenda is why majority of the superdelegates don't like her……

Joe Black   May 22nd, 2008 10:28 am ET

I was against Hillary as VP, but you should at least consider it. It would help unify the party. Just watch your back. She knows people…

Jim Webb was a favorite of mine and threw some money his way when he ran in my old State of Virginia. However, he is a rabid Hillary supporter, so you have to wonder about the guy.

As for Jim being a Vietnam Veteran, look how well that has worked for Kerry and McCain. The "Swift Boaters" and Karl Rove can quickly make even a John Wayne look like some pantywaist traitor to his country, with a few well placed innuendos.

It seems when it comes to politics, you are best served by leaving your military service out of the picture.

You know, George McGovern was a B-24 Liberator pilot in WW II? You have to have a lot of guts to fly one of those deathtraps. But he never made a big deal out of it. George McGovern, who knew?

Good for Barak. Time to put this Hillary nonsense behind him. The Florida and Michigan controversy is at moot point this far into the campaign. The people in Florida and Michigan need to realize, this is not a constitutional right to have our votes counted in a primary. This is a primary election, not a general election. This election has different rules. If the party wanted, they could decide to not count any states votes and just go with super-delegates. This election is run by the political parties, not the federal government. there is no rule/law/right that says these votes need to be counted, Hell there is no rule/law/right that says a primary election even needs to take place. Get over it. I am a white female from Florida and guess what, I HAVE GOTTEN OVER IT!!! Hillary it's time to reunite the party, stop ruining the Democrats chances of bringing about change to the country. Barak, I am a hard-working, white, female, pick me!!!!! I can get those votes that Hillary says you can't.

Webb, Sebelius or Clarke.

Marc   May 22nd, 2008 10:27 am ET

I'm already seeing the comments that are going to come flooding in about this being presumptuous and that Obama is arrogant, etc. First of all, let's wait until the actual Obama campaign says that they are searching for a VP, not some unnamed democratic source who could be from anywhere (and be supporting any candidate). Second of all, if he is, so what? He's not shouting it to the world, obviously. He's doing it "quietly." He's not trying to shame Hillary, he's just preparing for the race as best as he can. Just because he's putting out an inquiry doesn't mean he'll have a VP in the next week. Probably the next month OR SO. This is, as someone stated above, planning ahead. He has been more than careful in all interviews I've seen with him to say that they are still in this primary race and that Clinton has waged a good campaign. He knows she has. He's not denying that. This is more of a time factor than even a win factor. If he IS going to win, he's going to have to start looking for a VP soon. If he doesn't win, then sure it's all gone to waste, but at least he was prepared to win. If he started this process at the time when Hillary finally does quit, if she does, or IF he does win, then he would seem unprepared. No, he's quietly laying down the tracks just in case. At least that's the way I see it.
And of course, the media is just looking for something to print because they need to. I'm not saying CNN is bad, just that they are a part of the media. Any lead, they follow. This is a lead, albeit by someone who may or may not actually be close to Obama's party, or actually know anything about what they are doing, but, still, it's something to report. And it will lead to much speculation and at least an hours worth of strategic discussions by someone on some news show.

Pam has a good point, Obama doesnt have the national political track record experience and he doesnt have the experience of working on foreign policies either.

HRC in my opinion, is in a serious state of denial. Sen. Obama should move on and the Superdelegates should do their job and just go ahead and step up to the plate. Endorse Obama so he can get started on campaigning for the GE. They are just appeasing HRC to let her continue on with this nonsense of campaigning, knowing full well she cannot win. One would think that they are not as serious about winning the 2008 Presidency as is being protrayed.

Democratic party is once again in the process of making a great mistake(a great folly) in its history, by nominating Barack Hussein Obama as its presidential candidate. Its a pity that Mccain will be elected as the next President of America, as the Americans have no other better choice.
Many Republicans and independents voted for Obama in the primaries because they did not want Hillary Clinton as the Democratic Nominee. Its wishful thinking on the Democrats, if the they do believe that these people are going to vote for Obama in the Presidential election.

MC- Atlanta,GA   May 22nd, 2008 10:26 am ET

Obama/Strickland

Obama/Clinton

Obama/Kaine

Obama/Brown

you can take that to the bank…

Peter T   May 22nd, 2008 10:26 am ET

While I didn't like her pandering, Hillary would still be the number one choice for veep candidate. After Pennsylvania, she has too many delegates to be left aside. She just shouldn't get any power in an Obama administration.

eStreet4ever   May 22nd, 2008 10:26 am ET

Lots of great options out there. For the love of god, no Hillary. That would signal weakness and an inability to take "not this time" seriously.

JS   May 22nd, 2008 10:26 am ET

I think McCain and Obama should just partner up and be done with it. Afterall, McCain only wants it for 4 years and they both are pretty liberal. Not to mention the fact that Obama has treated McCain a heck of a lot nicer than Hillary Clinton.

repub 08   May 22nd, 2008 10:26 am ET

It amuses me to see the 'educated' Obama supporters continue to attack Hillary and drive her supporters over to the smart side.

Keep up the good work :)

DEMOCRATS UNITE!!!   May 22nd, 2008 10:26 am ET

ALRIGHT! AT FIRST I WANTED HILLARY AS HIS V.P., BUT AS OF LATELY, I JUST DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH OF HER I CAN TAKE. BUT IT REALLY DOESN'T MATTER, AS LONG AS "McBUSH" DOESN'T GET INTO THE WHITE HOUSE!

Hillary Clinton ALL the way!!!! We don't want ON THE JOB TRAINING President. Obama is full of contradictions, his words are in COLLISION COURSE!

White Female Democrat in PA   May 22nd, 2008 10:25 am ET

I like either Hagel or Gov Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas. John Edwards would be good for Attorney General. HIllary should have been a nurse in another life. If she is offered anything out of pity it should only be Secretary of Health and Human Services.
Obama/Sebelius '08 and '12

CN, Florida   May 22nd, 2008 10:25 am ET

Kathleen Sebelius, she is a woman, so that will help with women angry at Clinton's loss, and she knows the economy very well since she is doing a wonderfull job in Kansas. Edwards can have the Dept. of labor and to make peace with the Clintons I would ask Hillary to work on the Health Dept.

MD   May 22nd, 2008 10:25 am ET

Need to pick someone with more economic, domestic and foreign policy experience and vision than Obama has. Best start with 8th graders and work your way up.

Rus in St. Paul, MN   May 22nd, 2008 10:24 am ET

FL and MI will be seated, Obama will get the Uncommitted vote of MI, and he'll still have an insurmountable lead. It's good he's moving on, the party needs to move on and not keep pouring salt into this wound and adding to the divide happening within the party.

T   May 22nd, 2008 10:24 am ET

Hillary for President

Timber   May 22nd, 2008 10:23 am ET

So I guess the votes from the remaining states and PR don't matter?! Why bother wasting money having them then. Let us just let Iowa decide every 4 years and screw the rest of us. Some democrat he is. He is a worst phony than George Bush. For the first time in my life I am ashamed to be a Democrat. This primary season nauseated me in the way the media gave Obama a free ride, while treating Clinton harshly. I am definately demoralized with this election process. I will not vote for Obama, just have to decide if I should stay at home or vote for McCain.

Sebastian   May 22nd, 2008 10:23 am ET

Looking for you to run to the middle now Mr. Obama and pick your running mate with that in mind

Bobby   May 22nd, 2008 10:23 am ET

As I read the blogs from other articles, I cannot believe that Obama wants to comprimise about the MI/FL vote. I understand that their states votes will affect the general election, but HE was not on the ballot due to DNC RULES! This is why I am An OBAMA supporter! He is a good man and will listen to the will of the people and not indulge in selfish behaviors! I hope that OBAMA picks a running mate that has the same drive, understanding and willing to makes the neccesary changes needed to make this country great again!!!!!!

Remember people the world is watching!!!!!!

Joshua College Station TX   May 22nd, 2008 10:23 am ET

Obama needs to pick someone with name recognition and star power, but someone he can trust, who won't overshadow him or try to work against him.

I wish Edwards were interested. He would be super. Biden has the right kind of energy, but he tends to stick his foot in his own mouth at the most inopportune moments. Dodd might be good, but won't help Obama pick up rural white folks. I don't know what Napolitano or Sebelius or McCaskill would be like. If Obama picked one of them or Jim Webb or Sam Nunn or Tim Kaine, I don't know if voters will have enough time to get to know that person, because the time is getting short with the Democratic race dragging on and on so long.

NoMcSame   May 22nd, 2008 10:23 am ET

No Hillary because she does not know how to follow rules. We need honest people in the White Houes this time. Change is what we want. How can we teach our kids to follow rules but the president won't. She keeps moving the goal post. All of you racist you can vote McSame but we will still win this thing just to keep you from blowing off you own foot. We are here to help you see things through normal people eyes, not the closed eyes of your racist past.

I keep reading comments like Pam's about Obama's inexperience. But, what experience does Clinton have? Does being someone's spouse provide OJT? If I were married to a heart surgeon, would that provide me with experience being a Dr.?

Obama has as much experience as Abraham Lincoln. It's about character and trustworthiness. Pam, can you really say that you "trust" Hillary Clinton? If so, you are in the minority. How can American's vote for someone they (in almost every poll) say they can't trust? That makes NO sense to me…none, whatsoever.

James   May 22nd, 2008 10:22 am ET

Hillary is also looking at her VP choices so not so fast buster!

Tiffany   May 22nd, 2008 10:22 am ET

Marilyn,
Are you informed of the current issues that plague out country? Are you one of the Democrats that didn't cote in 2004 because Kerry was a flip-flopper. Or maybe you were one of the people that fell for the argument that gays don't deserve the same rights as married couples. Either way do you really want to contribute to the further decline of our great nation. If so…keep up the good work. We matter. How we vote makes the difference. Don't base your precious vote on emotions that can cripple both you and our nation.
VOTE FOR CHANGE

Super Democrat   May 22nd, 2008 10:22 am ET

What kind of track record did Bush have before he was elected?

Look at the mess our country is in now! Our economy is in shambles and the working poor are now even poorer. They have no health care, can't feed their children and can hardly afford the gas it takes to get them to their minimum wage jobs.

Just say you don't want to vote for Obama because he is not white and be done with it. But you have to know that anyone will do a better job then Bush or McBush.

Webb and Hagel are fine suggestions, but I hope he picks Joe Biden- 35 years in the Senate, a master of foreign policy, and a rare combination of gravitas, know-how, and charisma. And with his Rust Belt background from Scranton and Syracuse, he can get the votes that Obama needs to win, and allay fears of inexperience.

Sean   May 22nd, 2008 10:21 am ET

Pam, you can't be serious! Hilary is no better. With all of her "White House experience" and bedside chats with the former president she had to be one of the most informed Senators when it came time to vote for the Iraq war, yet she still (knowingly?) made the wrong choice. To this day she denies the fact that mathematically she can't win. Hmmm… denies facts to believe what she wants to believe…. sounds like she'd be another retard in the White House!

I'll take my chances with Obama!

Chuck R,

Obama should look ahead because if you've been paying attention, which apparently you haven't, there is no way the numbers can add up for Clinton. Not only is the race over, it's been over for weeks now, but Clinton won't bow out and is determined to divide the party to make her point.

And not only is she hurting the party, she is hurting her chances for anything in the future. People will not forget how she campaigned this time around.

You people who claim Obama is in inexperienced, are just plain stupid - its the best way i can put it.

bush was an 'experienced' politician, former governor or Texas, and look what he did to the US. Because of bush's 'experience', as a Canadian we are paying $1.30 a litre at the pump (nearly $5 a gallon). How you ask? because the US economy and the strength of the American dollar affects everyone world wide, especially since the dollar is so weak and it is the main trading currency for oil.

So if you guys are taking about experience, think different! this experience has done oh so well in the US for the past 7 years …

OBAMA 08 - win it Barack

Mike in Scranton, PA   May 22nd, 2008 10:20 am ET

Who cares. I'm a lifelong Democrat, as are the rest of my family. After this sham of a primary, we will all be voting for McCain this fall. In fact, now that I've witnessed just how undemocratic the Democratic Party can be, I'm not sure I'll want anything to do with it for quite some time. At least the Republicans are honest about their positions. This selective moral outrage and race-baiting that the Democratic Party has engaged in this primary has me beyond peeved. I finally see now what the GOP has warned about for years re: playing identity politics. Look at what it has gotten us as "our" likely nominee due to total gamesmanship: someone with the thinnest resume yet who is wholly unqualified to run this country — and all at a time when this country needs more than ever someone with the leadership and experience to steer this ship right. And that is NOT Barack (waaah-waaaah; they are picking me) "Present" Obama.

Ted   May 22nd, 2008 10:20 am ET

I am a Democrat but, I have reservations about Obama, I think he is a academic snob, not in line for what the Democratic Party stands for.the ordinary folks. I may sit this one out.

GERALD STROTHER   May 22nd, 2008 10:20 am ET

So here it is, if Hillary voters that got beat fair & square, and can not support Obama because he won by following the rules, then ya’ll have succeeded and destroyed the Demo Party and John will be the next President. Sad situation isn’t it!???!!!

If McCain picks the Gov of FL or LA, Obama is going to be in a pickle. Obama needs a strong Gov of a swing state by his side. If he doesn't ask Hillary (which I think he should), then he would be BEST served by choosing the Bayh of Indiana….he has to address and combat the inherent racism in rural America whatever he does. Bayh would go a long way towards doing that….

I think Webb is a great choice, or maybe Sebilius.

And by the way, if Sen. Clinton is so bent out of shape about Florida and Michigan counting, where was she all those months ago when the decision was made (including by those on her own campaign staff) to not certify the votes and strip them of delegates? If she truly cared and feared a repeat of 2000, why wasn't she yelling and screaming to the Miami Herald and Grand Rapids Press?

Oh, that's right, she didn't think she'd need them…

GC from Virginia   May 22nd, 2008 10:18 am ET

Pam - Neither did Abraham Lincoln. His story and Obama's are very similar. Neither did Bill Clinton, he had only served in Arkansas' state government.

I think we can all agree that having a "national political track record" hasn't served the current administration very well. It really should not be the measuring stick.

Cheryl, Baltimore   May 22nd, 2008 10:17 am ET

Edwards wont garner Obama enough votes. He hasn't been able to energize democratic voters, let alone moderate republicans. Jim Webb is too inexperienced and is virtually unknown. Having an inexperienced Pres and an inexperienced VP is not a winning combo. We are in economic hard times right now and our place as a global leader has been severely weakened. We need to get serious and stop making this process a popularity contest. We can't afford to pick the best person based on race or gender. We need experienced change agents. Obama needs to pick someone with an impressive resume of effecting positive change on a national (not state) level. He needs someone with the credentials he currently lacks.

patti   May 22nd, 2008 10:17 am ET

Democrats who won't vote for Obama are either stupid or racist. There is very little difference in the policy proposals of Clinton and Obama. There is a WORLD

Way to go, Barack! Let the VP selection begin, regardless of what Hillary may say that "it's not over yet." Obviously she still feels like the American electorate owes her the nomination and that she deserves it more than you. it's over for her and we all know it, even many of her supporters.

Good luck and success in your nomination and in finding your choice of Vice-President of the United State of America.

Stop calling for John Edwards. While I agree he would be a good choice, he has repeatedly said over and over that he has no interest in the position. Obama needs somebody that can win over the Appalachian region, the kind of voters who are not ready for a black president, even though Obama is 50% white.

JOHN EDWARDS,WHAT A TEAM !!!!!!!!!!!!!! THAT WAS EASY

Stephy   May 22nd, 2008 10:16 am ET

I am scared of republicans: Chuck Hagel scares me…although I think he would be fine (not the best choice though)

Mark   May 22nd, 2008 10:16 am ET

Bill Richardson would bring extensive foreign affairs experience, & would help with Latino & Western votes, which are critical for Obama. He also has the executive experience as a governor.

Kathleen Sebelius I say. Great women Great choice. this is a women of great character. honesty and Integrety. she is an absolute
Sweet Heart…. I listen to her speak and this would be a powerful ticket…..

OBAMA / SEBELIUS 08

BARACK THE VOTE!!!!!!!!!

NJTd   May 22nd, 2008 10:15 am ET

If Obama doesn't pick a female as his VP, he'll lose. He can't even begin to think he is going to win if he can't get women who voted for Hillary on his side, not to mention those "pesky" blue collar voters. BTW, he'g gone back to the stadium settings again, igonoring the rural areas. Did it work for Kerry or Dukakis?

Chuck Hagel would be a good veep but whoever Obama chooses, he will use his instincts and the God's will to guide him.

PCB   May 22nd, 2008 10:15 am ET

No one had more experience than BUSH and his advisers. That worked out so well.

Also, Hillary has been an elected official for less time than Obama.

Being first lady and a corporate layer for walmart don't count toward relevant experience.

scott   May 22nd, 2008 10:15 am ET

he has gotten less than half of all votes cast for dems. He would be a very smart man to choose the one who has gotton the other 50%+, thats the way to get my vote

Ding   May 22nd, 2008 10:15 am ET

Well…barack i think you should try making clinton feel she's not lost and you'd better offer the spot to her..
But.but.but…i fear she will not go well with him..imagine a vindictive republican offering help to obama..will she be like that??

Obama/New Day '08

Give it up, Pam. Take a deep breath. Let it go. It's over. It'll be o.k.

Griffiths   May 22nd, 2008 10:14 am ET

Obama needs someone that Clinton's supporters will like, and while this doesn’t necessitate a woman he does have plenty of good female choices: Maria Cantwell, Janet Napolitano, Kathleen Sebelius . . . I'd suggest Kristie Kenney but she'd probably make a better Secretary of State. Napolitano would be particularly interesting against McCain, but Obama might want to avoid that friction.

Steph   May 22nd, 2008 10:14 am ET

Please no Hillary. That will be a big mistake because not only will you be selecting her but her Bill too.
We trust that Obama will choose the best V.P. And I know whomever he choses beside Hillary will be a very good one no doubt.

Regina   May 22nd, 2008 10:14 am ET

Way to go Obama!
Keep up the good work!

J   May 22nd, 2008 10:14 am ET

No Edwards, No Clinton! Kathleen Sebelius or Wesley Clark!

hjd   May 22nd, 2008 10:14 am ET

This shows how arrogant Obama is? He is not the nominee yet!

Break out Michael Dukkakis out of mothballs. We could call it the Ultra Liberal Dream Team Ticket.
