New McCain ad hits Obama on foreign policy.
New McCain ad hits Obama on foreign policy.

(CNN) – John McCain’s campaign continued to hammer Barack Obama on foreign policy ahead of the presumptive Democratic nominee’s upcoming overseas trip, releasing its first contrast television ad of the general election campaign Friday – a spot that that paints the Illinois senator as a flip-flopping opportunist who opposed fully funding U.S. troops.

The ad is the first negative spot released by the McCain campaign, although the Republican National Committee attacked Obama on energy policy in a $3 million independent expenditure earlier this month.

“Barack Obama never held a single Senate hearing on Afghanistan. He hasn't been to Iraq in years,” says the announcer in the 30-second spot.

“He voted against funding our troops,” he continues, as a picture of Obama appears alongside the words “AGAINST TROOP FUNDING.”

“Positions that helped him win his nomination. Now Obama is changing to help himself become president. John McCain has always supported our troops and the surge that's working. McCain. Country first.”

The new spot follows a week of conference calls, memos and speeches from both campaigns on national security issues in advance of Obama’s first trip to Afghanistan and second trip to Iraq. On Thursday, the McCain team released an eight minute Web video highlighting what it said were Obama’s shifting positions on the war in Iraq. They also released a 16-page memo attacking the Democrat on a host of foreign policy concerns.

The ad will air on national cable and be cycled into McCain’s existing buys in 11 battleground states: Colorado, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and northern Virginia.

UPDATE: The Obama campaign responded that the senator voted in favor of every defense spending bill until the supplemental last May.

“While Barack Obama wants to change American foreign policy to wind down the war in Iraq and address the grave threat posed by a resurgent al Qaeda and Taliban in Afghanistan, John McCain offers this patently misleading negative ad," Obama spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement. "Given his calls for a civil campaign, it's disappointing that Senator McCain has slipped so easily into the same, tired campaign tactics that have become so familiar to the American people."

McCain needs to release an ad campaign about all the GI Bills he has voted for.

Do your research, he has voted against almost every Veteran benefit bill he has come across. For him to pretend that he supports our troops and he's a military man, makes me sick.

As a veteran, McCain is my worse enemy. He committed treason, made 32 propoganda films and has voted down almost every Veterans Bill to date. Quit lying McNo, it's unbecoming of an anti american, which is all you are.

bridgette   July 18th, 2008 3:54 pm ET

Is this coming from the man that would not sign the GI Bill because it would have made it too easy for the troops not re-enlist.. He does not want to fund and support the troops he just want to fund war. That is why are troops don't have the proper equipment they need. They are being electrocuted in showers and they are being underpaid because they are giving all the money too these private contractors. That money can go to the troops and those are things that they can do. It has knocked down every bill that would help and support the throops.

McSame is the same old tired policies of Bush and the GOP. Fear mongering. This is the way they want to win. They could care less about the soldiers and their families but how they can win the presidency. Look at how the veterans are treated after they return and this is a BIG INDICTMENT of the GOP and McSame. Shameful! McBush should be thrown out on his ear.

foreign policy…it is sad but it the desperation is showing in the McCain camp. what little respect he might have had has been long lost.

Pick Me! Pick Me!   July 18th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

Once again, this bears repeating:

McCain: ‘I Received The Highest Award From Literally Every Veterans Organization In America"

The recognition McCain has received from veterans groups is not "high awards" but failing grades:

Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America gave McCain a grade of D for his record of voting against veterans. (By contrast, Obama got a B+.)

Well, McCain, by the look of things, you are not for us Veterans.

Disabled Veterans of America noted McCain’s dismal 20 percent voting record on veterans’ issues. (Obama had an 80 percent.)

In a list of "Key Votes," Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) notes McCain "Voted Against Us" 15 times and "Voted For Us" only 8. (Obama voted for VVA 12 times, and against only once.)

Rob   July 18th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

even if that is not the nicest way and the Media is not doing their job I am glad that at least John McCain shows the people who Obama is.
Lets face it, Obama is just an opportunist…. definitely no change

Everything listed in that ad about Barack is about McSenile.

1. McSame was against the G.I. Bill
2. He hasn't had any meetings in 2 years.
3. The Veterans of America gave Barack a B+ for veteran issues. They gave McSenile, a Vietnam "hero," a D.

John Mccain more significantly was opposed to the new GI bill that Obama fully supported. Why (as usual) is cnn not reporting negative things about Mccain. The ad is also misleading as it suggests that Obama doesnt support the troops which he does. He rightfully is opposed to the war in Iraq and has been way ahead of Mccain in strategic importance of Afghanistan where Canadian troops are dying beside Americans.

Charles Los Angeles   July 18th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

SEN OBAMA WAS AGAINST FUNDING AN UNJUSTIFIED WAR??? (GASP!!!!!!!!!!!) Wow that suprises me. You mean he didn't want to watse tax payer dollars looking for imaginary WMD's? (Gasp Gasp!!!!!!!) I love our soldiers but i see no need for them to fight occupy or die in Iraq. Saddam is dead we aren't taking the oild there are no WMD's and we are not going to war with IRAN. So there is no need to invest in Iraq they have plenty of oil revenue they can invest themselves. But that would be the right thing to do. 10 Billion a month and countless lives lost and we aren't staking a claim on that oil. Eff that. Dubya your priorites are all jacked up you should have went for and siezed that oil for us the USA. They can keep the money we just want the oil. Isn't that what we are fighting for anyway?

Ms. RDS   July 18th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

LMAO this is too funny….It turns out that presumptive Republican nominee Sen. John McCain, has attended even fewer Afghanistan-related Senate hearings over the past two years than Obama’s one. Which is a nice way of saying, McCain, R-Ariz., the top Republican on the Senate Armed Service Committee, has attended zero of his committee’s six hearings on Afghanistan over the last two years.

Don't think this ad is going to go too far! How has he always supported the troops, he was against the GI bill! His ratings with most military groups is lower than Obama's How can anybody believe the blantant lies they come out with everyday. This funnier to watch than SNL! Thanks McCain campaign for keeping me smiling, this is just too easy

Why is CNN calling it a "contrast ad" when it is nothing more than a negative ad. McCain has gone negative as he continues to slide in national polling. Why doesn't CNN just call it what it is? Why does CNN still have a crush on John McCain?

Roger from CA   July 18th, 2008 4:03 pm ET

Won't blasting Obama that "He hasn't been to Iraq in years" kind of fall flat, given that Obama's bags are literally packed to go there in a couple days? Won't they have to pull the ad as soon as he leaves?

And I thought everyone was on Obama's case because he HAS been voting (except the most recent bill) FOR troop funding!

Joe Biden just said yesterday that the full Senate committee has fully dealt with all the issues re Afghanistan at that level, so there hasn't been any point to have the subcommittee meet. So, is John McCain arguing that there should be wasteful, redundant governmental meetings? Not too Repub-ish of him, eh???

McCain and the Republicans seem to want to have the facts all ways.

I'll bet they didn't include the fact that McCain attended ZERO hearings on Afghanistan that his committee held….ZERO….

Voting against money to continue the war is why the American people elected a Democratic majority to Congress…..unfortunately, only a slim majority. Therefore the veto can never be overridden unless some Republicans come to their senses….Obama did what he was there to do….

"VOTED AGAINST TROOP FUNDING" - McCain, lets talk about your resistance to the 21st Centruy GI Bill, which Obama fully supported. Lets talk about your horrific ratings by a number of veterans groups, the same groups you falsely claimed gave you excellent ratings and which in fact have given Barack higher ratings. Lets talk about your previous statement to agree to pull troops out of Iraq when asked to do so by the elected government and your sudden backtracking on that very point when they ask for our withdrawal.

McCain, let us hear what you are "For" instead of consistently and falsely attacking Barack with half-truths and misleading ads!

It delivered Iraq into the hands of the Iranians…

so I guess like with the Taliban in the 80's and with Iraq in the 90's… the Republican version of "working" means strengthening our enemies to the point where we can legitimize bombing them.

Thanks Republicans. Thanks so much… from Iran.

And thanks for giving Democrats another decade of your crud to clean up.

KM   July 18th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

If I was a Senator against the war in Iraq, why would you support a bill to continue paying for that war so that they could stay there. For those of you who do not know this let me remind you that may propose where and how much money is to be spent but the Congress is the one that controls the purse.

Big budget deficit = Congress
Surplus = Congress
Out of control spending = Congress
Money to fight in Iraq = Congress

If people really wanted to stop the war in Iraq, just stop the funding and then you have no money to fight a war. But that would be political suicide because you end up with an ad that say "Against Troop Funding."

gimme a break!   July 18th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

Funding the illegal war in Iraq (instead of Afganistan) is costing somewhat of 15 billion dollars a month! U.S.A. is going bankrupt fast people! Gimme a break!

Gene   July 18th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

If Obama does in fact go to Iraq today or tomorrow, this announcement by Senator McCain may very well compromise Senator Obama's security.

This is the height of irresponsibility! How can Senator McCain publicly release sensitive security details about a trip to Iraq. We NEVER know the details of overseas trips for White House or State Department officials and such planning is supposed to be done in secret. The dates and times of a Presidential Candidate arriving in Hostile nations are extraordinarily senstive information.

McCain portrays Obama as a flip-flopping opportunist.

But, there is no worst flip-flopping opportunist then McCain. He flipped his first wife and former beauty queen after she was no longer beautiful and became a financial drain due to her medical bills for a rich young Cindy, 17 years his jounior. After dumping his own family like dirt (two boys and a girl) so that he could pressure his ambitions and personal gratification, I have no confidence that he would do right my America.

McCain is characterized by his long time friends as a “self-centred womaniser who effectively abandoned his crippled wife to ‘play the field’. They accuse him of finally settling on Cindy, a former rodeo beauty queen, for financial reasons….”

I still have yet to learn from Senator McCain his vision for the United States and what his Presidency would mean. Thus far I know McCain can't remember if he even voted on insurance coverage for Viagra and not contraception, when informed he did vote and how he voted he laughed it off and shrugged off his vote and claimed he didn't remember (not a good admission for a geriatric candidate), he tells filthy jokes about raping women, he makes alarming jokes about bombing countries, he wants to drill for more oil and has no plan for renewable energy, no plans to help the economy except to preserve tax cuts for the wealthiest, his policy to combat escalating cost of fuel is to use less, his insight for the economy is "I don't know much about it" and by his own admission he falls short of an Officer of the United States Navy–an officer who cheats on his wife, lies and chases women is not a gentleman. So much for the Straight Talk Express.

Did he mention in his commerical that he (McCain) voted against the GI bill - wanting them to stay in for a longer period of time in order for them to get the better benefits. Did he also mention how many meetings he attended for the Committee that he is on himself - probably not.

Leah DiMarco, Texas   July 18th, 2008 5:00 pm ET

CNN once again covering up for McFuddled. This is not a 'contrast' ad. It's an attack ad. And it wasn't a 'surge' idiots, it was an escalation, just like in Vietnam. People are fools….mainly because the media is just corporate lackeys. Journalism is DEAD.

I want our troops home. End of story. I want the encomoy to grow. It has been a very long time since the ecomony has been good for most everyone when a rebpublicans is in office. The richer get richer and the poorer get poorer. This is proven by John McCain's first comment to the media when asked, 'are we better off today than seven years ago?'.

It's the Rove/Cheney/Bush circus of delusion all over again. Reality will be on vacation until December.

America would be much better served if there was a media watchdog that had to vet any and all political ads to insure truth.

Isn't this the same sort of propoganda that we criticise other governments for?!?!?!

Keep up the negative ads McCain. You can see what it did for Hil-lie-ary, and she's 20 million in debt to boot. Donate to her first, then try being orginal - and less hypocritical since you've voted consistently against all the veterans' bills - instead of using old tactics that didn't work the first time around. You're more of a joke than the bad jokes that you tell. Actually, you're pathetic and old.

Obama barely has a record on which to stand–he has spent his whole time in the Senate campaigning for president. When he has voted, he clearly has abandoned his base, as he races to the center. He's nothing but a paper candidate–an attempt by democrats to pull the wool over the American public's eyes. He's already being exposed and won't be able to hide much longer. Wake up and stop thinking the democrats or republicans have answers. They're only interested in power, money, and pleasing their corporate interests. Vote Nader/Gonzalez 08!

Apparently Mr McCain has no message of his own to run on so he figures why not start throwing the mud. The part that is priceless is AGAINST TROOP FUNDING as if by printing it in BOLD CAPS it somehow makes it true. I guess it's ok for McCain to oppose funding vet benefits, but if Obama opposes inserting fluff language into an appropriations bill (which is what happened) then obviously he's a socialist or something?

There truly are some uninformed people who commented on this.
McCain had a different version of a G.I. Bill that he was proposing. One that would increase retention rates and make the military as a career more enticing.

Can any Obama supporter answer this. In the most advantageous election for Democrats since Jimmy Carter in the 70's, Why is their candidate within 5% points of a Republican candidate that is not considered especially strong and has not even solidified his own base yet? John Kerry had a bigger lead in 2004 than Obama has right now. And this at a time when the non-incumbent statistically increases his lead. Obama is not near the savior the young voters and internet bloggers make him out to be. He has a ton of flaws and people do not adore him nearly as much as some would on here would love to think.

McCain says he is for the troops and veterans but his actions/votes tell the truth. He has for several years voted against their benefits. And if we don't have the money to spend on taking care of the troops and veterans, then we don't have the money to fight wars based on false pretenses. It is not right to send Americans off to wars and then they have to fight to survive when they come home. McCain knows nothing about this as he has Cindy's millions to live a plush life.

joaquin   July 18th, 2008 6:02 pm ET

This ad may work to Obama's benefit for it shows his consistent opposition to the war in Irag in statements going back to 2004. It is an insult to the American people to think moderate change in statements mean anything. The point is- Obama knew/knows the war was evil and bogus. Obama has the decency to praise the surge because of the efforts of all those troops. I guess McCain has to do something since he really has no inspired ideas except for advocating more war. Please, I pray voters will get us out of this national nightmare.

Patrick   July 18th, 2008 6:03 pm ET

Disenchanted   July 18th, 2008 6:05 pm ET

I have to say this is the another example of McCain exploiting the situation . I used to be a McCain supporter in 2000 but this is plain awful. Furthermore, increasing debt, committing resources to nations like Iraq and diverting from our own needed R&D in our youth does not make sense. McCain is not trying to build a stronger America but overall weaker. When will people wake up? We have squandered our advantage long ago and it will get worse. No thanks with these attack ads.

Wow, McCain says okay and Bush now agrees to a timetable for withdrawl from Iraq and redeploy them to Afghan. For a person who is inexperienced, Obama is surely right on the money. Ask yourself why is he going overseas? One reason only–votes! Ridiculous!

Marc PDX   July 18th, 2008 6:07 pm ET

What! Everyone knows that Barack is going to come galloping in on his Uny-corn, bringing us wind power and solar energy, and change, and no more war (except in Afghanistan and Pakistan where we're going to go in and kick some Butt!). And we'll take care of the poor and provide healthcare to everyone and tax the rich (that'll get 'em!) and the companies ("take that!") - especially the nasty oil companies. And we'll sing Bob Dylan songs, "Oh, the times they are a changin'…". And everything is going to be wonderful! :D

I think that McCain is just mad because he does not have a flying Unicorn with a rainbow trail and animals don't follow him around. He is a sad little angry frustrated man that has to drink budweiser (headache beer) forever and ever.

Cheryl   July 18th, 2008 6:07 pm ET

Obama is a fraud and a zero. You folks just don't get it. Like all of those who thought Bush was so great . . . .

Matt: honestly   July 18th, 2008 6:07 pm ET

Wow. This is too funny. gastoys, educate yourself. You obviously have no clue what Obama stands for.

Frank   July 18th, 2008 6:08 pm ET

Half truths, misquotes and outright lies! Just shows that McCain is truly McSame! He has no policies of his own, no new ideas, can't even remember his old ideas. All he has is I was held captive 45 years ago! His and the RNC slander, lies and attacks won't work this time. They will find out that Americans are fed up with these kind of tactics. Say nothing about yourself (because you have nothing), try to attack the other guy. Not this time, not this time.
McSame and the RNC…can you spell L A N D S L I D E

I do not support Obama but anything is better than 4 more tears of the same.

Veteran from New York City   July 18th, 2008 6:10 pm ET

As a fellow Veteran, I honored Senator McCain years of service for this Nation, however, supporting the Troops don't mean to send them to an unnecessary war where over 4000 deaths and an undetermined number of umputees, some are injured at a point that they are in a permanent vegetable states, laying down in some unfunded hospitals with improper cares.

The same McCain that voted against the GI Bill sponsored by Senator Webb of Virginia, the same McCain that has been absented from the Senate floor for a number of key important votes.

The same McCain that tried to redefine the definition of Success against the Webster Dictionary to suit the views of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld better yet his own view in order to fool the uneducated about the Iraq war. That's the reason the press has more coverage about Obama in order to camouflage McCain's gaffes.

Let's get real, the American people will pronounce the verdict in November. That guy McCain deserves a happy retirement in the dersert of Arizona, enjoying his multi million dollars after all these years of public deservice.

Bob   July 18th, 2008 6:10 pm ET

How much of a track record does really one expect for Ombama to have given that he is the junior Senator. On one hand I can understand people attack ing him for not having enough experience , but not for having enough experience in a two year period of time. My point of view is that in two year period time, Obama has come along way with defeating the Clinton machinery along with becoming more experienced as a politician. Given McCains 30 years in the Senate, the question would be what has he really done in 30 years. Congress has the lowest approval rating in the history of polls. You would have to say that McCain was and is part the problem why Congress is the way it is now today. Obama may not have experience, but he certainly is fresh.

Good idea   July 18th, 2008 6:10 pm ET

I like the idea of the two of them playing Halo….but let's make it Halo 3 and who ever gets to General 3 Star is the winner!!! Its about as goofy as this election is!

Susan from Scotts Valley, CA   July 18th, 2008 6:11 pm ET

Scott from Wichita:
Halo? Doesn't that involve using something that's almost like a computer? John McCain doesn't know how so that wouldn't be quite fair.

Brian   July 18th, 2008 6:11 pm ET

Why Dems need to wisen up and drop Obama at the Convention.

Brian   July 18th, 2008 6:11 pm ET

It's okay Obama lovers.

It's natural to be angry when Truth is revealed that hurts your candidates 'reputation'. Come to grips with reality.

It's no surprise that NObama is a flipflop machine. I've said it time and again that this man is a TRUE politician who will do anything to become president.

The scariest thing is his inexperience, track record and the quality of people he hangs around with - his church, his pastor/mentor, etc

The truth is the truth, but this isn't even close to the truth.

benvictor   July 18th, 2008 6:13 pm ET

Frightening. With less than 4 months until the election, Obama suddenly decides to try to get foreign policy/national security experience and to try to show some semblance of being a commander. Worse still, Obama has 300 foreign policy advisers, according to media, and no two of these advisers can agree on anything. Thus, the Obama flip flopping. And, he expects to get the experience and the leadership qualities during this ONE week trip. Unbelievable.

AT   July 18th, 2008 6:13 pm ET

OBAMA voted against Funding for BS projects. McCain do not know how to use the web/internet, he must think we Americans do not know how to go to the congressional sites to see and read for ourselves? Technology has created a new waves of Voters, and users who seek the truth for themselves. OBAMA has voted and taken more responsibility for the troops than has McCain, OBAMA never served, and HE OBAMA is in touch, he GETS IT! McCain served, he voted against the TROOPS all the time, HE VOTED TO SEND US TO WAR, but not to take care of us when we get home, OBAMA supported the NEW G.I. BILL, and many other VETERANS issues, McCain, growl, balk, and scream and VOTED NO!

JOHN MCCAIN CANNOT BE TRUSTED, WE THE TROOPS KNOW IN ORDER TO KEEP AMERICA STRONG, BARAK OBAMA GETS IT on ALL FRONTS!

Jacob, Des Moines Iowa   July 18th, 2008 6:14 pm ET

what happened to the straight talking, maverick McCain who was supposed to be a "DIFFERENT" republican wanter to create a different way to govern

as of right now, the only difference between McCain and Bush is that Bush, as dumb as he is, actually can type on a computer

who do we want as our commander in chief

some old guy who, if he did get on of the 3am calls, would slowly find his way to the SIT room where he'd start wavin' his can telling the generals to just bomb Iran even though they are reporting on a problem in the czech republic, and he'll be like "who??? you mean Czechoslovakia??"

or

a guy who would get the 3am call, hop right out of bed or what ever and be in the SIT room engaging the joint chiefs on the situation, evaluating all options to take the best approach, whether diplomatic or military

JonRoss   July 18th, 2008 6:14 pm ET

Obama is a clear and present threat to the security of my country, America. This ad is not near tough enough.
