al-Maliki praised Obama’s 16-month withdrawal plan in a newspaper report Saturday.

CRAWFORD, TX (CNN) – An embarrassing slip up for the White House press office Saturday, when an aide hit the wrong button and mistakenly sent to the news media a Reuters article saying Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki backs presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama's troop withdrawal plan.

White House spokesman Scott Stanzel says, "It was a mistake. Clips list for staff was supposed to be the addressee."

The Obama campaign quickly took advantage of the mistake, forwarding an ABC report detailing the incident to its press list.

This is not the first time the White House has emailed in error. But its timing is particularly embarrassing as the Bush administration's recent agreement with al-Maliki on a "general time horizon" for withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq is being cited by some as resembling Obama's proposal that U.S. forces should leave within 16 months.

For the past week, the Bush Administration and the McCain Campaign have been adopting Senator Obama's foreign policies. Bush is now talking to Iran, and McCain is asking that more troops be sent to the forgotten war in Afghanistan. What I would like to see are the emails of Bush's and McCain's new plans to steal Senator Obama's ideas and redressing those ideas as their own. How shameless!

Wow! That is a huge slip up! The events of the past couple of weeks have been completely in Barack's favor: the Iraqi government wants a timetable for withdrawal, John McCain is following Barack's lead on Afghanistan, the White House is following Barack's lead on diplomacy with Iran, etc.

This is even more good news for our next president!

Of course, the Bush and McCain camps decry Obama's foreign policy credentials yet they are adopting Obama's foreign policy proposals: diplomacy with Iran, timeline for Iraq and more troops for Afghanistan. This was a Freudian oops… they know Obama is correct, just can't say it.

Bush Administrration got their hands on some of Obama's policies and now wanting to implement it so of course the White House is trying to do damage control.

The problems with our country is that people fail to want to give credit to the proper owner. Because Obama is who he is, it is really difficult for some to accept that just maybe is has a good idea of what this country needs.

Yes this is a slip up, a BIG one. McCain consistently speaks of Obama's lack of judgement, it is Obama stance on Iraq, Afghanistan that seems to be correct. First McCain wants to critize him for not going and now that he is there and his stances were correct he still wants to put him down. It is sad that John continues to flip-flop. McCain just needs to stop whinning and find a way to turn the economy around.

Ken   July 19th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

Maliki likes Obama's plan. McCain adopts Obama's position on more troops in Afghanistan. Northern Pakistan, a terrorist haven, is bombed after Obama says he would strike at terrorists in northern Pakistan.

Funny…Obama says it and shortly afterwards, policy magically moves in that direction.

K of TX   July 19th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

HELLO AMERICA?!?

Is it just me or is everyone taking cues from Sen. Barack Obama?

What other conformation do we need?

McCain is wrong on the future of U.S. Foreign/Domestic policy and Sen. Obama is right!

Iran even called the nuclear TALKS with the European Union productive. Let me say it again—TALKS! More often than not, war is not the most pervasive form of achieving the common good. On foreign and domestic policy, Sen. Obama's judgement has been impeccable with very few exceptions. Sen. McCain has sided with President Bush's style of foreign and domestic policy, which has achieved very little.

Hats off to Condi Rice for finally convincing this administration to take a more conciliatory tone with North Korea and Iran.

Ula Nejad- Sacramento Ca   July 19th, 2008 3:10 pm ET

16 months is unrealistic for great negotiators and movers and shakers given the situation in Iraq and the region. Proportional representation in ethnic and gender is an opportunity for Iraq to set the standard in the region. Iran will have to play an effective role as Condi Rice had stated.

In North Korea… diplomacy and face to fave talks are now solving the problem. Obama has been saying this all along and has been contsistently proven right. How do the Neo-Cons get away with this false portrayal his "weakness" on foreign policy????? The Media

It's interesting that you would report the slip-up by the White House but fail to cover the actual content. The Iraqi PM is signaling the view of the Iraqi govt and that's not news? How about you tell me some more how Congress "needs" to act on President Bush's lifting of the executive offshore drilling ban? CNN is a disgrace.

CNN is as bad as NBC,CBS, and ABC. Did anyone notice Obama gets credit for everything from these networks. It seems to me that the networks knows that Obama has no experience and someone else will be running it, like Chenny had to run it for Bush. No one seems to care all they care about is a black man becoming president. This country is more important than making news.

This is what it takes for cnn to report this?

Pathetic.

First joke-president and his clone replacement bash the democratic nominee for his troop withdrawl plan, then both adopt it. Then, clone continues to brag about how his foreign policy experience is the main reason he should be the next POTUS. Now, the PM of the nation we are at war with comes out and basically endorses Obama as the better candidate, but more importantly, the one who has a better plan for both countries, ending the war, and so forth.

I'm pretty sure cnn was asleep through most of this….and it took the White House making a "mistake" to bring the story to the light, despite it breaking over 8 hours ago.

Dear Cnn,

The story here is how an "unexperienced" senator from Illinois and the Iraq PM made the joke-president and his clone replacement look like amateurs, not that the white house sent an email.

Obama may not have traveled more than Bush and MCSame but it is obvious that he has the wisdom, intelligence and fortitude - more than Bush and McSame combined. Mistake? Do you call that mistake or the real truth? Obama's foreign policy is such that we have not seen or heard of since Bill Clinton left The White House; everybody knows that; so the idea of calling it a mistake is itself a mistake.

Shrub has in the past month or so suddenly adopted several of Obama's ideas and stated policy plans. If there is a central reason for my dissaproval of the iraq invasion is the fact that, iraqis and arabs in general will never thank us or play on our side, these people have been going at each other since the beginning of times.

Eric-PA   July 19th, 2008 3:50 pm ET

What is Obama's plan for Iraq? First it was a complete withdrawl in 2009 and now he wants to keep soldiers in Iraq if conditions warrant it. So, I don't think anyone really knows what his plan is. My guess is that he will realize that his original stance of removing troops within 16 months is impossible and he will keep troops in Iraq for a much longer time. I really don't think his plans for Iraq will differ much from those of McCain's. Obama mentioned the 16 months only to excite the liberal base and help him win the primaries.

The gang that cannot shoot straight if America's well being depended on it.

1. Sleeping on the job prior to 911, worse attack on the mainland

2. Unprovoked Iraqi invasion and the humongous loss of life, limbs and mental health

3. Giving away the nation's wealth to the richest, who just gamble it away in the markets instead of producing goods and service.

3. Refusing to ask oil exec buddies to roll back fuel prices.

4. Out of control spending and ballooning of the nation's debt.

5. Wasting of the nation's wealth in Iraq.

6. Allowing the maniac muslims to reconstitute their murderous selves in Afghanistan-Pakistan.

7. The Hurricane Katrina neglect.

8. And the list of bush blunders goes on and on and on.
Fortunately the US is made of sturdier stuff. Another nation would have crashed under the bush incompetence,

LaTreetha E. Sharpley   July 19th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

It is truly surprising that anyone would think that Senator Obama's plan is not a good one. I question the reponsiblity of those leaders who would stay in Iraq. As a nation we can no longer afford to stay. In my lifetime, which is over 65 years, I have never seen the despair and fear I now see in peoples eyes. Whatever the reason given we must come home and rebulid our nation.
We should have never gone into Iraq, and having stayed over 5 years it is time to bring our soliders home. I for one believed like Senator Obama, that the war was a very bad idea. Even as I watched Sec'y Powell, give the case for the war for some reason I kept saying no something is wrong with this picture. I had no other knowledge then what was on TV; however I did not believe it.
it was a tragic mistake and we have lost over 4,000 young brave soldiers. It is time to bring the troops home and rebuild this nation to the greatest we once held.

Umm…isn't the larger issue that Prime Minister al-Maliki endorsed Obama's 16 month timetable? Would CNN have even reported on this if it hadn't been for the White House slip up?

Chuck   July 19th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

Yes and McCain said Obama's foreign policy platform was Naive and out of touch.
North Korea's Nuke program is gone, Bush sent a delegate to listen to Iran's Nuke people. Bush has accepted the need for a with drawal horizon (time table) which resembles Obama's 16 month plan. Bush calls for more troops to Afganistan come Sept 08.
Who is naive and out of touch when it comes to foreign policy? It appears to me that McCain is the one that is naive and out of touch, especially since Bush appears to be doing everything Obama said he would do if he were president.
al-Maliki also stated that a 16 month with drawal is NOT a surrender, which McCain states is what it would be IF Obama followed his plan.
America has accomplished its mission in Iraq, it is time to leave.

Hello People!

It is very clear that the Iraqi Prime Minister has not noticed that Obama has changed his position about the issue:

"Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki says U.S. troops should leave Iraq "as soon as possible," according to a magazine report, and he called presidential candidate Barack Obama's suggestion of 16 months "the right timeframe for a withdrawal."

Obama said yesterday:

“Well, I’m looking forward to seeing what the situation on the ground is,” he said. “I want to, obviously, talk to the commanders and get a sense, both in Afghanistan and in Baghdad of, you know, what the most, ah, their biggest concerns are. And I want to thank our troops for the heroic work that they’ve been doing.”

First, That is the same thing President Bush has been saying about this issue.

Second, which one is the true position of Obama about this topic????????

Tuesday Obama called for more troops in Afghanistan.

Wednesday Gates says Afghanistan needs more troops.

McCain is now parroting Obama's Afghanistan's plan and is acting like it's his. Just weeks ago McCain was saying Afghanistan did not need new troops. Why the MSM is not pointing out that Obama has been the leader on the issue is beyond me.

Obama is the leader on withdraw in iraq.
Obama has been one step ahead of Mccain in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Gen. David Petraeus said in an interview Saturday in his office in Baghdad that fighters who otherwise would have been sent to carry out bombings and other attacks in Iraq may be going to the rugged, lawless tribal areas of Pakistan along the Afghan border.

Gen. David Petraeus knows that the Iraq people and government want us out of Iraq. He knows there will be real problems if we follow McCain's idea of troops for 100 years and permanent military bases. The Iraq people and government will not stand for it. If we try and force it… then we become the bad guys. No, if's ands or buts.

It's time to pack up and go. We can keep a NATO task force in Iraq for a few years to help put out hot spots and nest… but thats it.

please don't remove my post, mods.
thank you.

Obama is as about as fit to be president…..i.e…..experience, etc., as I am, ; I might be a little more so, as I have plenty of good common sense, and I do not regard socialism as the answer to problems. This is a system where you can get ahead on your own efforts, and one should not rely on the government for handouts. Let's keep it that way.
p.s. I am not 'rich', so no emails implying that is so; I was raised during the depression and our parents got through by themselves……..hard work and determination, all with a family to raise.

What purpose does it serve (other than imperialism) to stay in Iraq indefinately like McCain would like to do? This country's Imerialist impulses got us in this whole mess with the middle east in the first place.

Rick   July 19th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

Sarah Bonner   July 19th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

Too funny! I bet they've been poring over Obama's words and their reactions for months. No wonder they've been trying to implement his ideas as their own lately, Bush thinks the ideas are so good they might redeem him somewhat in the public eye by implementing them himself before he gets the old heave ho. Why else the dramatic reversals lately on so many previously implacable issues.

Well there's lots more good judgement and vision for America to come, just make sure we elect Obama.

When it comes to the important foreign policy issues, obama has been right from the beginning. No wonder the Bush administration and subtly the McCain campaign are converging towards his positions despite the ill-advised "tough talks". 26 years in Senate is useless unless backed by judgment. Obama has shown great judgment required of a President.
Let's stop this demented notion that because McCain was a Vietnam POW he's more qualified to be a Commander-in-chief. How stupid can we be.

A time table which also requires different factions to work together will give motivations to both side. Each month's withdrawal should be tied to some agreed political goals and financial penalties if goals are not met and the troops have to overstay. Setup a non-partition steering committee to evaluate the progress.

Good job Prime Minister AL that's the way it should be for the truth not for what the Bush's Administration wants because that's not the way the Amecian people want. they want the troops to widthraw from Iraq as soon as possible. The white house people are trying to flip flop again about their words. It's already given out what their intention was and when they found out that no one ever interested in it at all then they are trying to reversed their words. This is the way they win always fip flopping all the time. We need to change this kind of mentality been going on for decades. We neen a new direction which we all can believe in, Obama 08.

Looks like obama's foreign policies are right on for someone whose supposely naive. Admit it this guy knows what he's talking about and isn't just following the crowd but practicing good judgement.
