COLUMBUS, Ohio (CNN) – Neither snow, nor rain, nor gloom of night only works for the post office – not presidential campaign photo ops.

The McCain camp planned a Thursday visit to an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico near the Louisiana coast, an off-shore drilling event designed to help attract attention as Barack Obama delivered his speech in Berlin.

But the threat of bad weather forced the trip to be cancelled. Instead, McCain will be spend the entire day in Columbus, Ohio , where he was already scheduled to take part in an evening town hall meeting on cancer. He’ll appear with Tour de France champion and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong at the Livestrong Summit on the campus of The Ohio State University.

I am starting to think McCain might just win, because he has to get something after having all this bad luck on his campaign. Its like he can't win for losing.

How can you, Lance?   July 23rd, 2008 9:16 pm ET

Wow. I had no idea that Lance Armstrong supported John "I'll NEVER surrender" McCain. How disappointing.

Lance, I thought you had more courage than to stand next to a man who could care less if your children end up in Iraq 20 years from now. I feel sorry for you and your misguided judgement.

Surely the story here is the incredible damage the oil spill has had. CNN you really are overdoing making up to McCain because he got cranky about the media not covering him.

Perhaps just one little story about the incredible day Obama had in Israel and Pakistan could get a little mention!!

Jim in Orlando   July 23rd, 2008 9:28 pm ET

While Nobama globe-trots around the world like the inexperienced boy-wonder neophyte that he is, at least McCain is trying to focus attention on the real problems and his solutions. I thank God every day that God gave me enough backbone and common sense to not choose to be a Democrat.

Pete   July 23rd, 2008 9:36 pm ET

I heard that McCain said Oil went down $10 a barrel because Bush had said he would open up drilling! What a liar that man is!
Oil is down because no one can afford it anymore!
Bush is NOT about to open the strategic Petroleum Reserve as his father (41) did and as Clinton did, both of them opened it flooded the market with oil and drove the price down!
Why won't he do that?
Because all his friends that financed his run for office are getting their payback for all the money they put in his races…ever wonder why they put in $100 million? This is their payback, and Mr. and Mrs. America, there is NOTHING you can do about it!!
Congress won't impeach him, you can't elect a new president fast enough to get these BOZOS out…Bush and Cheney should be impeached!!
McCain — just another BUSH term!

Bulldog   July 23rd, 2008 9:36 pm ET

It's truly sad to see the hatred coming from the McCain campaign. I thought McCain said this would be a clean campaign. It's one thing coming from his supporters, but for McCain to be personally saying Obama wants to lose in Iraq is lower than low. He should be automatically disqualified. I call for an amendment to the Constitution to disqualify candidates who make these types allegations that are blatant lies. All in the name of John McCain. McCain is ruining his heroism as a POW by engaging in Bush like attacks when he pledged he wouldn't. He should know better.

Roger from CA   July 23rd, 2008 9:37 pm ET

Ah, yes, life-long advocate for offshore drilling John McCain was going to show us how its done! Wait, you mean he only has been in favor of this for a month? Wow! But how is he going to blame Obama for that??

Isn't McCain afraid of appearing with Lance Armstrong, someone who made his fame in France? What? Is McCain one of those Euro elitists?

Voter   July 23rd, 2008 9:37 pm ET

Does McCain even know what life is like on an oil rig? or the dangers on the rig and under the oil rig by divers?

coal mining
oil rigs
nuclear uranium mining (and I don't want one of these anywhere near my home)

I'm glad Obama offers a $150 billion energy policy void of these dangers and McCain only offers a $300 million battery prize and "industry encouragement".

Jim in Orlando - are you even aware of how much more support Obama has abroad than he does here? it's 8:2 ratio by leaders and citizens

Lee from FL   July 23rd, 2008 9:41 pm ET

i applaud CNN to post more stories about McCain but these are so boring.the guy is just not news worthy.im sitting here trying to find articles on Obama overseas and all i find is "McCain attacks Obama"
"McCain fake VP buzz" "McCain drives in golf cart"

ALL BORING!!!

Ellie in Aurora, CO   July 23rd, 2008 9:43 pm ET

Now, Jim in Orlando, did you make nasty globe-trotting comments when McCain was in Colombia and Mexico? How about when he went to Iraq? Just a little jealous that the world would rather see an intelligent young black man in the White House than a cranky war monger? Here's another thing I can't quite figure out - in this day and age, who wants to get a photo taken with an oil rig in the background. Try a wind turbine or solar panel, foolish man!!

Cheryl   July 23rd, 2008 9:47 pm ET

Bad weather prevented McCain's big energy photo-op? Hmmm, maybe God is trying to tell us something. :)

MikeH   July 23rd, 2008 9:48 pm ET

Shriek, shriek, shriek. John girly-man McCain shrieks his little girl shriek trying to get the press to look away from Obama's highly-successful multi-nation fact-finding tour.

Item: Obama writes a comment in the book at the Jerusalem museum dedicated to the jewish people murdered by NAZI Germany, and McCain trys to twist it into some kind of Iraq hypocrisy.

Item: McCain says Obama would rather lose a war than lose the Presidency. When asked to substantiate that remark by a TV reporter, all he would say was that Obama was wrong about the 'Surge' (which Obama was, but so what?).

Item: McCain tries to blame Obama for high gasoline prices then says moron Bush is responsible for the drop in oil prices, two days after the Democrats announce an effort to close the "Enron Loophole".

Item: John McCain schedules campaign events in three US cities named "Berlin" at the same time Obama is delivering a speech in the Original Berlin, in Germany.

McCain is so desperate, he is painful to watch.

Ah Jim, the Republicans don't give up easily, even when confronted with facts about lies, facts about geography (did McCain flunk that?) and facts about facts. The truth is, Republicans have forgotten what the truth is, and they are so used to manipulating things and expecting the public to smile and agree, they don't see that the world has changed. The truth is fairly easy to check, and if tomorrow's hearings go as expected, there may be a resignation coming–not soon enough!

CNN, your bias against McCain is really evident here: what's with the negative connotation around not missing an opportunity for a photo op or attracting attention? He's running for President, of course he's not going to be sitting at home twiddling his thumbs while Obama's city hopping overseas, it's called running a campaign! If one event gets canceled you're going to replace it with another.

McCain is a farce. He was thrown a bone by the GOP Goofy Old People Party and has a snow balls chance in hell of winning.

Jim in Orlando, you must like Old, Goofy and Senile over common sense. McCain is all about 1 thing. Bomb, Bomb, Bomb.. Bomb Iran.. He has ZERO plans for helping out America with its real problems.. He wants to drill for oil, why?? Is he on the Bush/Cheney oil payroll?? He wants to keep "occupy" Iraq for 50-100 years.. Thats not progress. He harkens back to days of Ronald Reagan, not good days in America..

We need ethanol based on sugar cane, like Brazil has done. 40-50% of its vehicles run on Sugar Cane based ethanol. America can't seem to grasp that or even talk about it.

Typical of Republican'ts to always thank God for war mongers and other things.. There is NO god, If their is, how come there is so much hunger, disease and death in the world? Wouldn't your god want to save people? .All religious leaders say to Fear God, or bow to Jesus (if he ever lived, which there is no physical proof of Jesus' existence) I bow to noone.. When will you republican'ts stop preaching to everyone. and saying "Do As I Say, Not As I Do"

ron   July 23rd, 2008 10:13 pm ET

This is the first time Obama has been out of the country since the start of the run for president. McCain has been jetsetting around the world Colombia, Afganistan, Mexico, Canada, Iraq Vietnam. He dared by a foolish old man that thought he could make him look bad. Well the joke is on McFlipFlop. He is so out of touch he probably thinks we were won the war in Vietnam.

Maggie Muggins From Selwyn   July 23rd, 2008 10:17 pm ET

Whether Americans like it or not this November's election is being closely scrutinized world wide and your country will forever be judged through your vote.

If Obama is elected people throughout the world will believe the vast majority of American citizens are intelligent people who care about their country and it's standing in the world and not the callous, self serving barbarians with regressive outdated opinions and policies your current administration has portrayed as your image.

If McCain is elected most of he people in the world will turn their backs on you believing your sole interest is in dominating the world as the master race with greed and contempt for allowing or accepting diversity. In short they will simply consider you a nation of losers and leave you to your own self destruction.

HOWEVER, IT APPEARS THAT SINCE OBAMA BECAME A CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT THE REAL RACIST HAVE JUMPED FORWARD WITH ALL THEIR NAME CALLING OF HILLARY AND NOW JOHN McCAIN. IF THIS IS WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY THEN FINE. BUT YOU SOUND LIKE A BUNCH OF WHIMPERING JACKALS. YOU SAY NOTHING OF SUBSTANCE. GET WITH PROGRAM AND STICK TO THE ISSUES. YOU CAN'T MAKE A SILK PURSE OUT OF A PIG'S EAR LIKE YOUR TRYING TO DO WITH OBAMA.

Hey Mc Cain Guys, please take time to explain to your candidate what is the definition of the word "Surge". That Iraq does not share border with pakistan. I don't see any news paper making buzz about all these regular mistakes. Please tell him that there is a real difference between shia and sunnis.
That oil price is not going down thanks to Bush policies or up because of Obama. Stop taking people for fools. There are lot of contradictions in his words and that would make Mc Cain launch a 3rd world war by "mistake", that he is the only one to think that he can take Russia out of the G8 club…
What a dummy!

Jindal said he would not be interested in being VP a LOOOONG time ago, why is it news now? You are digging up old news to make McCain look bad just because so many have refused to be Obama's VP.

Jack Jodell, Minneapolis, MN   July 23rd, 2008 10:28 pm ET

McCain is truly pathetic. He, the darling of the media for so many years, is behaving like a spoiled little brat competing with a sibling for mommy's attention. And all because he's not the center focus now and has to share and even yield some of the limelight with Obama. Do we really want this ill-tempered, frightened, and immature-acting type of man as President? I think not.He has nothing new or creative to offer us on the economy, foreign policy, or the war on terror either. At a time when our economic downslide is broad and deep, he even admits the economy is not his strong suit. So what does he do? He endorses the same ol' Bushonomics which have destroyed our economy in the first place. DUH! So no matter what clever photo ops or gimmicks McCain or his campaign come up to steal media attention, it won't matter: OBAMA is CLEARLY the better candidate!

Anyone hear about the DNC?   July 23rd, 2008 10:53 pm ET

So let me get this straight. The SAME PEOPLE that said the gas tax would not do anything to help America is CHEATING and not paying gas tax.

The city's attorney general ordered them to pay the tax and no charges will be filed… yet.

Michele Hussein, Oregon   July 23rd, 2008 10:54 pm ET

This story would not even have to be told if McCain did something progressive (in front of an oil rig??) or worthy of attracting positive attention as he and his campaign is seeking so desperately to do.

Maggie Muggins, thank you for your post. After the last eight years, especially, we may be left to our own devices while we self-destruct, as the current methodology has been to act alone in spite of good counsel towards restraint, and avoiding working together for the common good. There has been egocentric leadership for too long. You may be right. There just might come a time when our beloved nation will be looked upon with such disdain for her mypopic, adolescent style of independence. Please pray for us to grow up to consider the ramifications of our behavior. Please get a prayer chain going that the world does not give up on this beautiful nation, and that we would make the "right for U.S., right for the world" choice in Barack Obama.

We have tens of thousands of square miles of empty desert in the west that could power the US if exploited correctly! Supply and demand drives oil prices. In Canada as the states as fuel prices go way up, so does carpooling, transit system use and staying at home. Lower demand means surplus and lower prices. Saying a threat of more oil rigs lowered oil prices is like our politicians saying they have a surplus in the budget because of fiscal responsibility rather than more tax due to high gas prices.

"While Nobama globe-trots around the world like the inexperienced boy-wonder neophyte that he is, at least McCain is trying to focus attention on the real problems and his solutions."

Most ironic statement I've come across in ages. McCain is the one who's usually all over the place (Canada, South America) while Obama is at home discussing actual issues with understanding. When Obama starts to travel because McCain taunts him about not doing it, he gets flak for it. Thats the kind of hypocracy that is going to get McCain sunk (along with his total lack of understanding of anything economical)

BV   July 24th, 2008 12:02 am ET

Maggie Muggins you are so right.
We've got people who vote a straight party. It wouldn't matter if a dog were running for President, they would vote for him. They've voted that way their whole life and they can't see beyond the end of their noses. Proof is right in front of us. We have something that the rest of the world including Canada can see and yet we could let him slip right thru our fingers and actually come out looking like a country of idiots. The polls say that most Republicans are not excited about their nominee yet they will vote for him. Why aren't they excited? Could it be because he's not the man for the job?? Yes, but will they admit it? NO. How they could be so stupid is beyond me. It is beyond reality. It is just darn scary. We will loose the respect of so many nations if McCain is elected. It will be one of the biggest blows this nation could suffer at a time when we need to make a big change and set forth a different set of values.

Belle   July 24th, 2008 12:04 am ET

Posters: Your analysis is really crazy. Instead of insulting each other, why don't you actually try comparing issues!

Obama STRETCHED the truth in Israel, say HIS committee (a banking committee he isn't even on). Doesn't it bother anyone that he doesn't mind telling untruths if he thinks no one will know. Is THAT the kind of integrity we look for in a man or woman vying for the highest office in America? Wouldn't it be better to actually question BOTH candidates when they lie about something? Clinton was asked about the sniper fire directly, and she said, "I don't know why I said that. I wrote about it in my book, and I knew what had happened. I was wrong. I only hope the American people can forgive me."

Who actually has more integrity? The person that admits they lied, and asks for forgiveness…or the person that expects supporters, surrogates and others to explain away what they think he might have really meant?

Ann   July 24th, 2008 12:04 am ET

Your mention of God reminds of the hypocrite in the Bible who went to the temple to pray to thank God that he is not like the tax collector who is a sinner. Stop mentioning the name of God in the same breath as you condemn Obama. Oh, hang on - you live in Orlando - the land of fantasy…

Willow, from Iowa   July 24th, 2008 12:49 am ET

McCain keeps saying that the price of oil dropped because Bush wants to allow offshore drilling. Some people say that the price is dropping because the Democrats are looking at the speculators. I think that its going to drop back to "almost" acceptable levels because oil countries fear that if the price stays too high, the US, under an Obama administration will look at alternative energies and Obama will spend that 150 billion dollars on alternatives. The oil countries do not want to lose us as a customer.

Why should I leave a comment? You are biased for the bho camp. You were also biased against Hillary. Do any of you look at the web sight that is considered bho,s Senate schedule of things he has done or not done? Will really help you make up your mind un a hurry.
I flip channels when your reporters get too mushy about michelle and barack. Who wants to listen to biased reporting?

McCain has the right stance on drilling for oil as the republicans do. Every time I hear the democrats about their stupid do nothing policy I want tp puke. If Bill Clinton had not vetoed the bill that the republicans put forth in the 90's we would already be getting the benefits from them sources off shore and in Anwr.. We can listen to the democrats and still be dependent on the Arab oil for eternity or we can use our own resources. Votes in this house will all be for John McCain and the reppublicans straight tickets . I am tired of the whining do nothing democrats.

It seems like McCain is getting angrier evry day. Instead of doing what he is supposed to do, he is wasting too much time accusing Barack Obama. Seriously, If you ask McCain what is the capital city of Texas, he would say Hmm Obama was against the surge and he still thinks the surge does not work.
It is beyond loughable……
I hope Armstrong will tell him to take it easy and tunnel the anger to some other energy

It's a VERY good thing their wasn't a bunch of oil rigs out there, like McCain wants…You think oil is expensive now, wait until a hurricane hits and takes them all off-line…Plus we don't have the refinaries to process the oil…Don't believe his hype, it's BS…..

John McShame, Obama Is Going to Tax You & Cindy, but Not Me & 95% Americans Making < $250,000/Yr   July 24th, 2008 1:01 am ET

McSame can go work in the oil rig for a change…at least that will be a good photo-ops for more oil drilling!

to think that he gave credit to George Dubya for a $10 drop in the barrel of oil…not a single cent drop in the price of gas per gallon in the pump is appalling.

even george dubya cannot claim credit…because we are NOT YET feeling an ease at the pump price JUST YET!

SO MCSAME….HERE GOES YOUR MISGUIDED DOUBLE TALK AND FAILED POLICIES SPIRALLING OUT OF CONTROL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

H. Thompson   July 24th, 2008 1:10 am ET

Lance, Lance, Lance.
I was once one of your biggest fans, and proudly defended your honor when the critics doubted your lab results from the Tour.
But the moment you step on stage with McLoser, I will never be able to look at you the same again.
Put Landis on the stage with McLoser, but not you!
Disappointed……………..

If you go back to the Jimmy Carter day you can figure out why we have oil shortages, high gas prices, no refineries and no nuclear power. Over the years the democrats have always blocked these actions to enhance our own resources. I think the states that let their coast lines and land used to supply coal ,oil and nuclear ought to have the right to raise their price for out of state customers who refuse to take advantage of these resources if they have them. Let the states like california , colorado , the eastern seaboard and other west coast states pay $8.00 a gallon for gas and a few extra thousand dollars for there home energy. I am 60 years old and I know of one Nuclear accident in Russia during my life time. Now I have seen plenty of flooding and forest fires due to the enviro- nuts wanting to save a field mouse or a snail. Also cnn get off the "Black In America " kick .You act like they have had it so hard compared to the rest of america. Give me a break. Since the 60's they have had every opportunity in the world handed to them on a silver platter. It is time to wrok as many of them have done and make their place in America or do like the blacks that are whining, sit in the Ghetto or hood and draw freebe checks. I applaud the blacks who don't whine and fit in to america ,have jobs and contribute to america. I will not leave the white trash out either . Get a job or starve.
