Onlookers gather for Obama's Thursday speech in Berlin, Germany.

BERLIN, Germany (CNN) – Crowds have grown and thinned throughout the day outside of the swank Adlon Hotel where Barack Obama and his entourage are preparing for the Democratic presidential candidate’s visit here.

Police have closed off part of the street in front of the hotel which sits in the shadow of the Brandenburg Gate as throngs lean on metal barriers, cameras in hand, hoping to get a glimpse of the man himself.

Watch: Crowds wait for Obama to speak in Berlin

Just a short walk up the road is the Victory Column where Obama will deliver his remarks, a speech he says will be a “substantive articulation of the relationship” he would like to see between the United States and Europe.

Although Obama and his aides have strongly denied politics plays a role in today’s event, a leisurely stroll towards the event site left a different impression.

Obama volunteers have set up shop on street corners, and are registering Democrats who live abroad to vote. “Anyone an American citizen?” bellowed one woman holding a homemade “register to vote” sign. “If you’re a Democrat abroad you must register to vote,” yelled her male counterpart. Takers were quickly ushered to a folding table manned by several eager Obama supporters, where they were provided paperwork to fill out.

A few were looking to cash in on the Obama frenzy. For 5 Euros one could pick up two unofficial Obama buttons. An Obama ’08 button with pictures of both John Kennedy and Barack Obama appeared to be doing well, but the prize went to the button that had Obama’s head atop the body of a beer garden waiter holding seven huge glasses of German brew. The button’s slogan? OBAMAFEST! Of course.

Why is JFK so great? John F. Kennedy supported the Diem coup and started the Vietnam war. So why is JFK so great? Maybe Obama is the new JFK?

Henry n New York   July 24th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

If the polls are correct what they are saying should really bother Americans as a whole. What it depicts is that you have one candidate that has made confusing statements regarding several areas of foreign policy. McCain has confused Shia and Sunni; he has moved Iraq's border next to Pakistan; he argues a tactical right (the surge) judgment against an overall mid-east plan (Iraq is the wrong war, wrong country, wrong enemy) and wrong on our future position regarding Iraq. The Iraq government wants U.S. troop withdrawal, Senator Obama has called for that withdrawal for years, Afghanistan is becoming an increasingly dangerous project and Bin Laden has not been captured or killed. Obama's plans would save our soldiers and bring most of them home, it would go after a leader responsible for the death of thousands. McCain wants to stay in Iraq even against their wishes, he now wants to send the same number of troops to Afghanistan almost a year after Obama first called for more troops there. He voted against the current GI bill and yet the polls say over 40 percent of Americans still would vote for him. Hillary supporters say they are voting for McCain even though he doesn't believe a women has a right to control her own body and he wants to make abortions illegal. If the polls aren't altered, slanted or bias then it appears their is only one obvious reason. Many Americans must be polling on skin color and not the content of the candidates campaigns. Another sad realization of American immaturity, lack of unity and inheritant prejudice just maybe the result of our next election and if that happens - God help us all. This just could be worst than the last 8 if McCain gains the White House.

* * * All humanity tunes in to learn how much longer American Idol contestant Barack Obama can fool the world into thinking that a man with no credentials for the office of president of the United States whatsoever can last as a candidate in the 2008 presidential race. * * *

The supposed leaders of the Democratic Party have betrayed our core principles of democracy and have failed us all. Once Obama's been humiliated in November, those who enabled him have to go.

This is nothing more than a political rally held in a country where Hitler is still revered in many parts of Germany. So of course these people are excited. They think it's the second coming of the "fuhrer".

Jason L   July 24th, 2008 12:17 pm ET

I am gonna heckle CNN.. hows that grab ya??

What exactly are our strategic interests in Israel again?? They have no oil, nothing really to "sell" to the U.S.

When was the last time anyone was at Wal-Mart or Target and said, Whoa, where did all these Jewish made products come from, i'm seeing less Chinese goods these day! LMAO Hmmm must be the influx of lawyers that Israel supplies us..

I am sick of America being in bed with Israel and the taxpayers dollars, Billions of them ending up supporting Israel's terrorist attacks on the Palestinian people.. We supply them with Nuclear technology. Fighter planes, weapons.. If the U.S. were to be less friendly with Israel and stop our influence, then maybe peace in the middle east would be achieved.

Obamafest.. what a joke. This isn't Woodstock or Ozzfest. FREAKS!!

Glen Beck obviously has not noticed the huge substantial matters dealt with in huge substantial ways by Barack OBAMA, which have riveted millions of intelligent people in the USA and the world. These are people who are longing, yearning, for something honest and substantial to come out of those who have controlled the USA to date. They are looking for something more imaginative than the Bush/McBush staple, which is fodder for the unintelligent and bigotted: War, WAR, WAR; Rule the world by brute military and financial force.

OBAMA is no ordinary rock star. He is the kind of icon that were Kennedy, Martin Luther King and as is Mandela. He delivers substance with imagination and integrity. Beck insults millions of citizens of the world and of the USA and by claiming that they are just falling for just sizzle

Does anybody understand or know where the bottom line is? Nobody ever elected for President has experience to lead your great nation. They all have been Senators or Governors. But what is that compared to the Presidency of the USA? The bottom line is that ordinary people see and feel who is honest, clever, authentic and who believes in what he is saying and is finally bringing the change to a USA in modern times. The world has changed in the past 10 years and the USA and the world needs somebody who is prepared to bring the change. I really do hope that the US citizens feel and see that Senator Obama is that man.

I have to tell you, I have always been a huge opponent of Hillary Clinton. I had vowed to vote for McCain had Clinton won the democratic nod (no matter who her last opponent was, obama, edwards, or otherwise).

That being said, how can anybody say they will vote for McCain when they are a democrat or liberal for that matter? All of you rediculous people need to think about what you are doing.

I would never vote for McCain now that i've seen who he really is, and i would have glady crossed over and voted for Hilary by now. McCain is a crippled old senile man and he might actually be worse for our country than Bush.

Try and pay attention Hilary supporters, you may hate Obama, but for the love of God, look at the man you would be voting for in McCain. Put your anger aside, and really look, because he is a fool.

I am having a very tough time understanding someone who is a true Independent will have any questions after having seen and heard both candidates. The difference is so obvious that you don't need to spend more than 5 minutes listening to McCain that he should not get your vote. Let's see, there seem to be some, lost in the stale Bush/McCain Kool-Aid, who are more comfortable having tens of thousands of Europeans take to the street to protest the Bush/McCain war policies than to see them take to the streets of Berlin in the same or greater numbers to greet and support the next President of the United States who represents change from the ruinous war and economic policies of Bush/McCain. Please, these are our allies who warned us not to go into Iraq and for their efforts were labeled the "old Europe" by an old shallow man. Barack Obama gives us a golden opportunity to redeem our image in the eyes of the world. My fellow Americans, this is leadership we can accept with pride.

Missy M   July 24th, 2008 12:38 pm ET

I'm just curious how Obama's vision of the "relationship” between the United States and Europe differs from the alliance that's been in place for decades.

Mike   July 24th, 2008 12:39 pm ET

That's the problem with this country (and much of the world) today. People think "Survivor" and "American Idol" constitute reality.
News flash: Reality for America has been made over two centuries by FREE hard WORKING people (not welfare recipients), who have shed their BLOOD fighting oppression (instead of hiding behind ineffectual rhetoric) around the world so that all of these liberal idiots have the right to spout their gibberish. Anyone who would vote in more uniformed fools like Pelosi and her crew (Obama, for instance) deserve what they get. Just don't ask ME to pay for your stupidity.

Karwolo   July 24th, 2008 12:39 pm ET

I am definitely not voting for McCain but Obama has got no substance. To be fair though, he's still creating a buzz with his empty rhetoric but as they say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. But seriously though, when the debate starts, instead of people asking about the quality of his flagpins they should ask about issues like the economy and iraq and insist that he give a substantial answer. Same applies to McCain by the way.

As someone who has lived in Germany for many years, I am embarrased Obama is giving a speech in Berlin. He should not try to pretend he is JFK or Reagan, (it is rediculous to comapre him to them) and stop this nonsense of trying to win the election by speeches…and this time campaigning in a foreign country. I think it is wrong, and so are his policies.

The only chance we have to win the war on terror is to get the rest of the world on our side and eager to support us. Obama represents the America the rest of the world wants to love. They see him as the embodiment of the American dream and the endless possibility we offer to anyone willing to work hard enough. We've shot ourselves in the foot long enough. McCain said Obama needs to go overseas… now that he has, McCain is jealous that he draws bigger crowds and support by foreign leaders.

This has the potential to be absolutely disastrous for Obama back in the United States. The photos and video will be great, but I think his campaign will see an unexpected backlash from this. Obama is going to give an American foreign policy speech in Berlin, Germany to a couple hundred thousand cheering Germans? It may or may not have this result, but I can see the potential for many Americans to be insulted by that - it gives the impression that he is campaigning in Europe to Germans. This has to potential to be the first bad move by the Obama campaign.

I hate all this talk of experience.
None of the candidates has ANY experience being the president for the simple fact that non of them have ever been the president. Experience is something you gain by DOING something and since none of them has ever done it… they don't have any experience. Period. McCain has no more experience than Obama or HIllary, or Mitt. Hillary has seen it a lot closer up and has a much greater knowledge, but actually being the one to make the decisions, to be in secret meetings… she hasn't done that either. Obama has just as good a chance as any other candidate.

And what he has on his side that NO other candidate is this worldwide support. That is something this country hasn't had in almost a decade. He also has hope, and in case you want to bash all the hope talk, you should pick up a history textbook and give it a quick perusal. You'll notice that throughout history, the ones who have changed the course of nations are the ones who had hope. Ghandi, Dr. King, etc… hope was their mantra. Hope for a better tomorrow. There is not a single choice that any person can make that is not based on hope. Hope that this shirt makes you look better than the other. Hope that purchasing this car will save you money in the long run.

Obama may have some policies that we don't all agree with, but no candidate ever will agree with everyone. What Obama does have is this amazing gift to unify people and get people excited and that can be more important than anything else sometimes.

I for one am glad to see all the excitement abroad for this Jr. Senator. There is a reason they are putting his face with Kennedy's on buttons.

Why is CNN not reporting that the US State Department is telling their foreign service employees that the should not attend Obama's speech in Germany. They are US citizens, and even as the Hatch Act prohibits their employees from actively participating in politics, attending speeches by candidates, as long as they are not working to get that candidate elected has never been denied before. What is next, the White House telling people who they can vote for if they want to keep their jobs?

It's refreshing to think that we almost have a leader that is again respected around the world. These foreign nations are our friends and if you take a step back and listen to how they are trashing our country and how ticked off they are at the US right now, you would understand that we desperately need someone to make amends and repair the damage that Bush and his administration has caused. Our reputation has been severely damaged and we need to get back in good standing.

How can you trust McCain when his greatest strength is national security and the war on terror and he doesn't even understand what has happened in Iraq????

Sounds like the Democratic Socialist Party whose motto is: "say what we want to hear not what you'll actually do".

In Germany–they're used to leaders who are uninvolved and asleep at the switch.

That would be a change for us in America.

As a German, I - such as many other Germans - feel offended, that Barrack Obama, who is just a candidate in this election, uses German history and places for his campaign. He has nothing to do with Germany and just hopes to get some cheering Germans for the media. That's an insenstitive way of campaigning.

Justin, Ohio   July 24th, 2008 1:07 pm ET

Of course they're flocking to see Obama. After all, they also elected Hitler. And we all know that Hitler promised the world and offered change. Also… as we know he definitely gave change.

Hitler in preparation of executing the monumental plans to redesign Berlin into Welthauptstadt Germania (World Capital was the name Adolf Hitler gave to the projected renewal of Berlin) part of his vision for the future of Germany the Nazis relocated the pillar to its present location, Originally the column was built to celebrate the military successes of Prussia over Denmark, and was originally positioned in front of the Reichstag. Hitler decided to move the column in 1938, and added 7.5 metres to its height while he was at it.

Of course the Germans won't be voting in a US election, but the new US president will be, hopefully, out retracing these same steps in repairing our country's position in the world theater. Our country would wither and die if it can't work well in this global economy. We NEED our allies in many different ways to prosper.

Obama should rightly be commended for his ground laying work over seas this week. I don't think McCain could've accomplished a fraction of what Obama has done.

Why don't you mention on your broadcasts that there are hundreds of thousands of American Citizens living here in Old Europe. I can say for myself that it does matter to me that Obama chose to come to Berlin where I live and vote In Berlin. Why dont you mention that indeed there are many many voting Americans and interested Europeans who care that there is this interest given to us here.

Tom   July 24th, 2008 1:09 pm ET

Obamatans… it looks like you'll get your robot wish and Obama will win the election (like ANYONE could really lose to someone that wants to continue bush's policies) but mark my words… when you get your wish you will realise it was just as foolish of a wish as the one made by people who wanted to see Dubyah Bush elected.

Europe can afford to like Obama. He wants to stop the Iraq war(supposedly) so they will automatically put him above Mccain. Also, they won't have to DEAL with him running THEIR country.. all they care about is us not hitting the hornets nests with a stick anymore. If Obama is elected I will leave my beloved homeland and move to europe for that very reason.

Reagan/Nixon '08   July 24th, 2008 1:09 pm ET

Why doesn't Obama choose Kerry as his running mate? They can counter against the 'straight talk express' with the 'doubletalk/Flip flop express'. Did we really want someone pedaling a commodity they can't sell (hope, you can't get hope and keep it with those college educated, long winded speeches)? Can you see why the PUMA movement is growing? How is it that a man runs for President after being a senator for less than 180 days? Experience? We need that right now. Maybe McCain isn't the best choice, but he has more experience, willing to do what's right (not what's always possible, it is called fortitude, look up the senate's record to see who makes the hard choices and who makes the popular ones). Enough. Reagan/Nixon for the ticket in 2008!!!

Do Europeans really see America as going it alone on Iraq and the war on terror–or are they willing to let America go it alone to preserve their own political safety and conserve precious human and financial resources?

Will Obama have the intestinal fortitude to pursue interests Americans by majority feel are global in nature ( Al Qaida, war on terror, security in Iraq, sequestration or limiting of Iran's influence in the mid-east and proliferation of chemical/nuclear weapons) and in the whole worlds best interest?

It has taken extraordinary guts to go against the prevailing media notion–as he has.

Will Obama have the personal strength and conviction to follow suit?

Is he diplomatically savvy enough to get the Europeans on board with helping in the war against radical islamic terror cells and states who sponsor them?

My 2 cents–NO. He is totally ignorant of the big picture–and his pie in the sky advisors are to.

your question to CNN as to why is there not a special called being white in america?

Are you serious? If you would have looked at the program you would see it was not blaming whites for the struggles of black people, it was showing the struggles of black people in different scernario's. Actually you don't want them to do a special on being white in america, because based on the stat's, white people are fairing better than blacks because you all have been given the advantage whereas we as black people have to work a harder. We have had to struggle, but we have not stop fighting.

To NOTFALLINGINLINE.org. Hey are you Bush supporters? I thought he was a party animal at Yale and was a postgraduate drinker. Did those qualifications impress you? He used his connections to get in USAF Reserves; took flight lessons and went AWOL. No chip off the old block is he; unlike his father who after being shot down chose to rejoin his unit. His experience was being given oil companies to manage and bring them into bankrupcy or be saved by the Arab friends of his family. He used his experince' to become Texas govenor; but the Dems ran the show. He ordered the invasion of Afganistan then quit that war before it was won; he then invaded Iraq after misleading the American public and declared victory 4 years ago-but forgot to bring the troops home. The same war McBush supported with all his experience-the same experience he gained being a member of the Keating5-oh yeah your guys a campaign reformer w/ a personal private jet exception written in his law. Thats the party of experience. Wall Street excess; bailouts; 4.00 gas; layoffs; estate tax exemptions for the super wealthy-like his wife. And foreign policy expertise but who just cannot seem to ever get it right w/o his human teleprompter battling Joe Lieberman.

This is a defiing moment in our American History, it's clear it's necessary for this moment to happen, Obama is a intelligent and clearly articulate leader..we all know that, to be black in American you have to be more then just …and he is. If he was less then just…would this day had come? I think not. Nobody gave him nothing that he didn't earn, whether you like him or not. This is the American way, this is the American dream, if not, then is it a lie? Not taking away from McCain, he endured for this great country, but what does that have to do with him being a effective president? We have honored McCain then and now. But the reality is his train has come and gone.

Umm, I am so tired of people who support Obama like he is the next coming, but cannot give a reason for doing so other than, he is about change, he will tax the rich, the world loves him. How about Obama supporters actually give some substance as to why he is the greatest thing since sliced bread. He has no real platform. All he does is deliver charimatic speeches that amount to nothing. Change this, change that…sounds like the familiar Democratic rally. I can guarantee one change…more taxes. I am not saying that McCain is my first choice, but by far, he is much more experienced candidate and his ideas are much more sound. I could care a less if Europe likes my President. As someone else said, if they don't like our President, typically that means we are doing something right.

Bravo, "Henry n New York", well said.

Obama's extreme popularity overseas would almost immediately reverse America's negative image in the world. McCain would only add to it.

> Once he starts talking they'll realize he's all talk and no substance.

Once again the stupidity of Americans continues to amaze. Please continue to watch American Idol and NASCAR while your empire continues to crumble around you. Oh look, Abu Dhabi just purchased the Chrysler Building and some Belgian just brought Budweiser corporation.

Didine - Maryland   July 24th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

Senator Obama, I am so proud of you. The whole world respect you and because of you, they are ready to love America again. May God continue to bless you Barack. I can not wait to hear your speech in Berlin, Germany.
Go Obama!

The europeans would hear anything that comes out this guys mouth. I hope they don't think too much of it or think we Americans think alike, to the contrary, his missguided ideas and views of this world could cause to our country.
Well, election is not here yet so maybe we don't have to worry about him wining anything because he WON'T.

Internet Argument Winner   July 24th, 2008 1:38 pm ET

Its not just Obama, the World is celebrating the end of Bush era.

NoMcSame   July 24th, 2008 1:39 pm ET

Next week $25.00 more to help the Obama cause. The Obama cause is the American cause. The American cause is to be a leader in the free world but we need a true leader.

jr   July 24th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

Adam - Your post is a little delusional if you think that McCain has no more expereince then Hillary or Obama. No one has expereince in the position of the presidency until they are elected, yes that's true. But just as a tradesman begins his career first as an apprentice, then moves onto journeyman, and then onto master, so do we, the real people judge thier experience and readiness. It's all in the preparation towards that highest office goal that counts. Based on current lifetime achievements, experience and readiness the three rank this way.

McCain / Clinton = Masters
Obama = Apprentice

Maybe you need to get off of that diet of pablum and strained peas because believing everything that a novice politician tells you does not make it so.

I love it that people keep bringing up the fact that Germany has supported the Kaiser and Fuhrer thing. Well perhaps if you looked back you might see why. When Hitler took power Germany was in what was probably THE WORST economic state that it had ever seen poverty ran throughout the country like wildfire and then along came a young energetic radical calling for change and promising to give Germany back "what was rightfully hers". It's easy to understand why the German people as a whole got swept up by Hitler. And what does all of that sound vaguely like? Maybe American history??? Right after the stock market crashed…anyone???

Mark Cross Junction VA   July 24th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

I saw this picture taken about 60 years ago when the third reich walked the same path. Obama can't be trusted such as Hitler was, say one thing to please the crowd and turn around and do something different. Mein Kaump Obama

Phil, FL   July 24th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

Phil - if you make more than a qua\rter of a million a year, he will tax you more.

If you make less than a quarter of a million a year, your taxes will be lowered.

Get your brain to work

Michelle   July 24th, 2008 1:42 pm ET

Is it true that there was a CONCERT in Berlin to draw a crowd?

Griff   July 24th, 2008 1:42 pm ET

Listening to Borack Obama in Germany, is just like the rerun's of Adolph Hitler, as he was in 1938. 70yrs ago… No doubt Germany will be showing those same reruns, after this Idiot has gone..

pakuna   July 24th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

this coming world leader will rise to power on a wave of global euphoria as he arrives on the scene to temporarily save the world from its desperate economic, military and political woes. Like Satan himself, who frequently appears as an angel of light, this man will deceive most of the world into thinking that he is a great man of peace, a hero. The prophet Daniel wrote of the Antichrist, "By peace he shall destroy many," and "he shall come in peaceably and obtain the kingdom by flatteries" (Daniel 8:25; 11:21).

Randall   July 24th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

Hail the new Messiah. Hail the new King of the World.

God have mercy on America.

Dear Phil,

Obama is the greatest thing since slice bread for the following reasons:

He's for one America
He wants ideas from Dems, Repubs and Indys
He can not be boxed in a corner or a category
He respects all people, including you
He will respect the office and
