The Left-Foot Secret to Massive Tee Shots

This subtle move turns decent drives into monsters

This story is for you if...

• Even when you try to muscle the ball it never goes as far as you'd like
• Your left foot spins out on your downswing

Check This!

Make your regular full swing with your driver and stop when your hands reach belt high. Check your left knee: Is it closer to the target than your left hip?

What You're Looking For

When your left knee beats your left hip to your left foot, you lose your left-side post and have nothing to hit against. It's like taking a baseball swing on an ice rink — no torque and no power.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Drives

Make a few more swings but this time concentrate on shifting your weight forward so that your left knee and left hip arrive simultaneously above your left foot. Do it in slow-motion if you have to so you can ingrain the proper feel. Once you do, you'll start delivering maximum power.

If You Still Can't Do It

Make sure your left foot stays put. Often it will slide out on your downswing, pulling your left knee with it. From the top, "stick" your left foot in the ground — see if you can leave an impression in the turf. That will help you create your left-side post and make sure your left knee doesn't beat your left hip.
